OK they both last the same amount of time. But what makes the SSO a better oil. What are some difference that people say bewteen both the oils. Sorry kinda new to Amsoil

Well, I'm not an expert, and the following are rough numbers, but
90 percent of engine wear occurs during cold start-ups. 80 percent of wear may happen in the cold startup itself, and another 10 percent during the 20 or 30 minutes it takes to bring a 30-weight oil down to an engine-friendly, useful viscosity of roughly between 9 and 12 centiStokes at an engine operating temperature of about 212 F or so.

The 0w at cold startup will be "thinner" or have a lower viscosity than the 5w, so the 0w won't have as far to go to reach 9 to 12 centiStokes.

....Something like that.

Actually, the SSO is recommended for up to 35,000 miles or 1 year, while the ASL is 25,000 or 1 year (half of each for severe service.
The SSO has some different components in the additive package which help reduce friction even more.

I'd definitely recommend the SSO 0w30. It felt like a 20 weight in my engine (2.2L Ecotec) and it is a very robust oil. If you can afford it, get it. If you're like me where you have to work very hard not to change your oil every weekend, I'd recommend ASL 5w30 or the XL 5w20.

If you don't run those oils out past 15,000 miles - go with the ASL. It is cheaper and just as good in my opinion. It may not start as well as SSO 0w30 in -65F but........ You are in Florida so lol.

If you want a lighter feeling in your engine, I'd say try 1 change of SSO out. You'll never know unless you try it out. Thats what I do. People have all the opinions and experiences in the world but nothing beats trying it yourself.

Advantages of SSO = little bit better oil so you can go a little longer on the OCI - "a little." There is a bit of a cost difference that doesn't make it worth it in my opinion. Now if you were comparing SSO 0w30 to SuperTech 5w30. SSO 0w30 no question. :)

I'm a believer in ASL as I've used it extensively myself and suggest it to customers when it comes to synthetics. I've taken it anywhere from 15k mile to 1 year drain intervals with no problem.

I personally don't think the price difference is worth it.

Run a batch of ASL 5W-30 and keep accurate fuel and mileage records.
Then run a batch of SSO 0W-30 and keep the same kind of records.

Based on the data, figure out for yourself if the extras dollars are worth it. You might find it not worth it for 10K runs, but well worth it for 15K or longer runs.

Seeing someone who hasn't tried one or the other say the difference isn't worth it is ??? Maybe like saying a Ferrari isn't worth it because I can only afford a used Fiat?

A Ferrari is a toy.

The mpg increase will depend !

well looking at the prices with the surcharge, Amsoil is getting even ore expensive now. Only If I could find some head to head test with Amsoil ASL, Royal Purple, and Mobil1.

Personal experience here... (see signature for vehicle)

I ran 5w-30 amsoil ASL for 10,000 miles. I have run 0w-30 amsoil SSO for 5700 miles so far. On average with the same driving condition and route, same weather, and same tire pressure. I have only seen a difference .2 mpg increase. I will say however that this oil makes the motor idle smoother than it did before. I would also assume a winter mileage increase would be more noticeable due to the "0" grade.

All in all the SSO is a better oil for me because I like to change my oil once a year with filter changes every 5000 miles, and anyone who knows anything about the 4.7 (Chrysler) knows that it isn't exactly easy on oil. (numerous sludge issues with this engine and dino oil over the years whenever oil changes went much past 3-4000 miles)

SSO uses XOM's top of the line PAO. (SpectraSyn Ultra) The PAO is a higher grade than what is used in ASL/ATM. So I've heard.

Quote:
SpectraSyn, SpectraSyn Plus and SpectraSyn Ultra PAO

I have wondered the same thing myself. I stayed with the ASL mostly for cost reasons and it just don't get that cold here in Arkansas. Under severe conditions the 17500 mile and 15000 mile OCI's don't counter the cost of the pricier oil.

it's less than $9 a year. skip the mcdonalds drive thru on ur way home from work one time and u can pay for the upgrade.

I already skip McDonalds -- haven't been there in years. I made that cut and a few more to move over to Amsoil in 1999 or 2000.
