M1 0W30 ESP vs. M1 5W30 ESP ?

WM has the M1 0W30 ESP for $27 per 5-quart jug while the M1 5W30 is only sold in expensive quart bottles for $9.87 ea. Both oils are virtually the same at cSt @ 100 degrees C. with the usual slight bump in low temperature performance expected with the 0W oil rating of the M1 0W30 ESP . I would expect more VII's to be included in the 0W30 ESP but was wondering if any of the oil approvals for M1 0W30 ESP included DI engines where perhaps added VII's may not be the best for intake valve deposits ? M1 5W30 ESP would be better in that regards but WM is a no-go price wise while Auto Zone sells M1 5W30 ESP in 5-quart jugs for $37 ea. which is a $10 increase over the available M1 0W30 ESP at WM . While the M1 0W30 ESP should be fine in a mass port injected engine (i.e. gas washing over valves) would you run the M1 0W30 ESP in a DI engine - or consider paying more for the M1 5W30 ESP with reduced VII's ?

I currently use M1 5W30 EP in my vehicles - but both the wife and I are spirited , heavy foot drivers , so having a HTHS cushion of 3.5 minimum would be nice with the M1 Euro ESP oils versus the suspected HTHS of around 2.9 for the M1 5W30 EP .

I think you mean 0W-30 and not 10W-30 for the ESP?
You did mention that you and your wife are spirited heavy foot drivers, come to Maryland and let's see what you got. LOL

There aren't any oil standards that I'm aware of that have an engine test for intake deposits, either with PFI or GDI engines. An oil with less VII should produce less valve deposits, but I doubt it would make a big difference.

In the PNW, it doesn't get all that cold in the winter or hot in the summer, so you don't really need a high-VI oil, and the grade shouldn't matter that much either. It's pretty much the ideal climate for a motor oil. A 10W-30 should be a bit thicker and more shear stable than a 5W-30, and might be better for valve deposits.

It's not the VII but the additives. ACEA Cx oils, of which the entire ESP line falls under regardless of grade, will allegedly exhibit less IVD compared to an ACEA Ax/Bx.

I missed a space , sorry and yes was referring to M1 0W30 .

Both fine oils with great approvals. I personally like the 0w-30 esp due to the high virgin oxidation. Call me old fashioned.

Had this debate myself, not so much about the price but which one would protect better in all 4 of my vehicles. In the end the 0W-30 flavor won based on better availability, price, and minimal (if any) performance benefits of the 5W-30.

Picking nits, the 0W is .1 CsT higher @100C than the 5W. the 0W has the same approvals and rating as the 5W except it meets SP "Engine Requirements" instead of fully API SP rated. The 0W is also missing BMW LL-04, but has all the same MB approvals (more important IMHO). Also, the 5W has a slightly lower Noack then the 0W. However, is the $10 savings of the 0W worth it for some nominal differences that won't make much, if any, difference in use over the 5W? For me, that gets a 6 of a really good IPA so yeah, I'd get the 0W ESP. I did score 9 5qt. jugs of the 5W ESP at AZ using some bonus rewards for around the same cost of the 0W at Wally so have a few more OCIs left before I need to get some more ESP. YMMV, Happy Motoring.

My #1 favorite Walmart oil for the Korean vehicles..... Mobil-1 EP Triple Action 10w30.
Not much VII worries in that five quart jug. Get free delivery at Walmart.com with $35 purchase.

Mobil-1 Euro 0w40 comes in 2nd Place. You'll love either one. Heck, buy one of each.

I have to wonder when ESP 0w30 will share same chemistry as the 5w30.

People went nuts on the Russian Oil Club when the first VOA's of new SP 5w30 ESP came out. No moly and no esters.

But it's important to keep in mind that new technology is being used most likely. We've read the articles shared on here about new bio based material and unique components being used in these newer, low SA oils.

And despite being off the shelf, some of these new formulations that have low metallic additives (Mobil 1 Triple/EDGE EP) trounce the toughest industry standards. So it doesn't appear to be an issue.

At my local WM : M1 0W30 ESP, 0w40 FS and 5W40 FS - all under $27 per 5 quart jug . Which one would you prefer and why ?

I was going back and forth on this myself, and recently decided that the benefits of the 5W-30 ESP (better Noack, thicker base oil, fewer VII) don’t outweigh its higher price, for my use (2024 Hyundai Elantra N @ 5000 mile OCI).

I bought the 0W-30.

A side benefit is that I’m also using this in our Odyssey, so it simplifies things.

I also noticed at WM an entire end shelf dedicated to “new” M1 5W40 Euro … I didn’t know there was such a thing ? Same comparison would apply to M1 FS 0W40 (which WM carried a lot of stock too ) . WM now carries on the shelf the 0W30 ESP and the two Euro 40 weight oils for under $27 jug.

I’m beginning to think if you drive a DI vehicle with no PFI valve support - any of the Euro approved oils would be better than an SP D1 Gen 3 oil in terms of protection and reduced deposits .
