I made the mistake of letting one of my automotive classmates change my oil. The oil level on my car seems about a half a quart above the high-level mark on the dip stick. What should I do? Drain it a little from the drain plug, or should I just continue driving it? I already drove about 100 miles on it, and it sounds fine. In fact, it sounds a little smoother when I first start the engine. I haven't seen any smoke yet, but then again, I haven't been checking.

TIA

If you engine consumes oil... then you'll be down to the right level after a few thousand miles.

if youre like me you will drain some just so you wont have too wory about it anymore

At a half a quart over, there's nothing to "worry" about. Just drive the car and forget about it.

Some cars won't mind the extra oil and if you haven't noticed any issues yet you probably won't.

If it was tranny fluid you could freak out but you should be okay. If its really bothering you drain a little out.

Just check the oil 100 times or so and you should be back down to the right level.

What type of vehicle/engine? If it takes 4 quarts, it is a lot bigger deal to be half a quart over than if it takes 6 quarts. If it takes 5 quarts or less, I'd take the oil filter off, let it drain, empty the filter of oil, then put it back on. That should get you to about the right level.

I was going to suggest to him to just replace the filter but that would probably end up with some time without oil being pushed through the system until the filter fills back with oil. Not sure how long that would be but not my idea of the best way to get the oil out of the system.

Don't worry about it. The first time I changed my own oil on my new vehicle it looked the same way and I was equally concerned about it. My buddy who has forgotten more about automotive maintenance than I will ever know, told me not to worry about it. Eventually I decided to take his word for it and after a little bit of time I was okay with it. I'm not going to lie though, part of me was relieved when it was time to change the oil again.

Anyways, the vehicle is still going strong with no issues at all.

What type of car do you have and how old is it? Does it happen to burn oil? Also, how much oil do you normally put in? It might one of those things were your car normally takes 4.7 quarts and he just put in a full 5 qt bottle

No worries.
Unless we are talking about a riding mower, a half quart is nothing.
My 4.5 qt engines have always gotten five quarts.
No ill effects over many miles beyond 100K.

What kind of car??????

1/2 over should be fine i've done it many times but usally only do 1/4.

you'll be fine....
