For the 1994 Safari. The AC Delco is a blue can and just a wee little bit bigger. Costs $4.19. The PureOne has a textured can like a Fram ToughGard, costs $6.99, and has some of the best reviews of any filter.

Which would you choose, for the next OC in 4000 miles or so?

Pure One, Amazon has 'em for under 4 bucks.
 
I run nothing but pf52 on my Chevy 1500. I like if awful well. The pure one is what I run on the jeep, and it does very well also. I'd prefer the AC delco myself for a GM product.
 
the P-1 is a better filter IMO--but I use the AC-Delcos anyway on my Tahoe and Corvettes
Why? because I haven't seen an AC Delco (non E-type) blow out its media luke Puros have been seen to do, and I care for the well being of these vehicles

The PureOne is not restrictive. It's probably more free flowing than a lot of other filters out there.

Only time an oil pressure gauge will show the restrictiveness of an oil filter is when the oil pump is in pressure relief mode - which usually doesn't happen with hot oil unless the engine is near redline. Otherwise, the pressure will always read the same at same engine RPM & oil viscosity regardless of what filter is used. This is because all oil volume output from a positive displacement oil pump goes through the filter & engine when the pump is not in pressure relief mode.

Oil pressure seen on the gauge is the result of trying to push Volume X of Oil Viscosity Y through engine circuit Resistance Z. When a positive displacement oil pump is not in relief mode (ie, it's not shunting output volume back to the sump and all output goes through the filter & engine), then the indicated oil pressure after the filter will always be the same regardless of the restrictiveness of the oil filter.

Since the pressure gauge is after the filter, you will never see the effect of the resistance of the oil filter unless the pump hits its max output pressure and starts shunting some of the output oil volume back to the engine's sump. In this mode, the system becomes pressure dependent, not volume dependent, and that's when the filter's resistance becomes part of the overall system pressure drop.

I have no idea where that rumor comes from. I guess people's "calibrated eyeballs" look at the narrow gap between the end cap and the can, or the closeness of the packing of the media folds.... but our eyes are horribly "calibrated" for that. The gap is narrow, but its a large diameter and the surface area is large- it just looks small. The media folds are close together, but the oil is moving S-L-O-W-L-Y because of the huge surface area- it can flow between the folds easily.

Your data in that linked post really is the bottom line, you can forget "eyeballing" filters, or trying to infer what the filter is doing from the dashboard gauge when you see that sort of hard factual data.
 
use what you want i can hear the difference and see it in my oil gauges..I prefer flow to filtered slow oil any day for my own engines.
I see lots of engines and although i only twice have seen an oil filter destroy an engine one was a honda the filter just fell apart inside (it was an off brand but i dont remember the filter) and one was on a slant six with a bad motor mount. I do know i have the same thinking as the people that design the engines on most cars when it comes to filtering. I own a shop that rebuilds engines thats all we do.
 
A non ecore Delco is Champion's basic filter, roughly equivalent to a Purolator Classic. A P1 should offer better filtration and the same if not more flow than the Delco.

Personally, unless I could get the Delco dirt cheap, I'd go with the P1 every time.

I also think people get a bit too worked up over flow. Unless you redline the thing all the time, even the most restrictive oil filter you're likely to find will flow more than the engine will ever demand.

Filtration is more important.

With a positive displacement oil pump, there's no such thing as oil being "slowed down" by a filter. Unless of course, the pump is so shot that it can't build pressure to hit its max pressure relief setting, or the pump is in pressure relief mode - which only occurs near redline when the pump is trying to put out max volume and shove it through the engine.
 
ZEEOSIX I have seen my hwy oil pressure lower with a fram on my challenger. Hemi messure pressure at to of block. U wrong

If your Hemi measures oil pressure before the filter, then yes, you would see a pressure difference due to the flow restriction of different oil filters.

BUT, if the oil pressure sensor is after the filter, then the ONLY time you would see a pressure difference due to filter restriction is when the oil pump was in pressure relief mode.

I've done measurements with 4 different oil filters on my Z06 (sensor after the filter), and every one of them gave me the same exact pressure at the same exact oil temperature and engine RPM. If you don't take the measurements under the same exact operating conditions with the same oil, then your data is worthless.
 
less pressure afterr filter less flow. Does not matter if pump is bypassing. Less pressure less flow period. Theres noting scientific about it. The only time I had less than 50 to 55 psi is when I ran a fram. Fram oil pressure 46 psi. same drive same oil temp same rpm same same.

I have seen what you have. It was a fram that lowered my psi. How many miles on your engine.]

If you're getting less pressure after the filter and the pump is not in bypass/pressure relief mode, then that means your oil pump is weak. A tight positive displacement oil pump will force everything through the filter/engine unless it's in bypass mode. If the pump is weak (ie, leaks a lot past the lobes) or the bypass setting is low, then a more restrictive oil filter will cause lower oil pressure after the filter show up on the gauge. It's also possible that the FRAM was so restrictive that your oil pump was in pressure relief mode ... you just don't know and can't really tell when the pump is in relief/bypass mode (no real indicator). Did you cut that filter open to see if there was any internal problems?

What's the absolute highest oil pressure you've seen on this car?

Like I said ... the tests I've done on my car show absolutely no difference in pressure after the filter when I know my oil pump is not in pressure relief (which is around 70 PSI).
 
Im not sure the highest pressure I have seen. I have never seen over 70. Filter was a smaller metric filter. I have switched to a standard thread nipple. The 3\4-16 oil filters are larger. The fram got cut open it looked normal. The fram was on for a day. Then I put a metric pure 1 and oil pressure went back to normal. What phsyical size is the filters you tested?
