Is this your brother by chance?

I remember lot boys flooring new and used cars as soon as the engine fired up, when they had to move them in temps a lot colder than 30F. No problems that I was aware of. In your case there's nothing you can do to change what happened, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

My neighbor does it every morning, w/o fail. Her cars are usually using oil by the end of the lease, and some were starting with a puff of blue smoke. That takes a few years to happen though.

If it sounds normal as before, drive it.

My brother years ago went to start his Datsun B210 when temps were cold. This is a carb engine. When he started it the rpm's raced way up screaming. He frozen from what was happening. Bad things happened before he reacted. From what I seen, looked like a valve keeper let loose and valve dropped into the cylinder. He eventually turned the ignition off but the damage was done. Shortly afterwards he found the gas pedal stomped all the way down on the floor. I don't know if the throttle return spring was broke or a floor mat had anything to do with it. He had floored it to set the carb idle steps, choke, plus that squirt of fuel before cranking/starting. He just got another used engine to drop in it. He never did tell how long it ran before things sounded bad.

This morning it was -30 F. My 86 Subaru had been plugged in for a few hours. ( block heater, oil pan heater, trickle charger) I got in, pumped pedal three times, turned the key and before I could get the engine shut off it was at 6,000RPM! Scared the heck outa me! I stuck my toe under the pedal and pulled it back up, started it and idled normal, no weird noises! So I went inside, finished getting ready for work. It was kinda like having cruise control on the way in to work, I'd have to pull the pedal up to stop. Guess I should lube the throttle cable!

BTW I'm running Rotella T6 5-40. Cheers

My 04 Camry V6 start up RPM went up to 2000 for a while, but lately it is starting at about 1600.Doubt if you damaged your engine with that 0W-20 you are using.

Thanks all. I think the rpm's went pretty high and it was loud. We didn't see how high as it was all very sudden and the focus was to get it shut down. Also, I learned on another forum here modern cars have rev limiters. I probably got worried for nothing (judging by some of the comments folks made here) but I buy a new car for "life" and take care of it mechanically and cosmetically so stupid things like this really bug me.

There's enough residual oil on interior surfaces, your engine is and will be fine. No need to worry. Back in 1983, I had a ford fairmont (worst car i ever had) where the gas pedal froze partially open when i started it at -10f. It was fine.

No harm done. I started my Silverado in -10F weather in Montana a couple years ago and chained up a stuck bronco outside my buddies house and begin pulling it out of a bank in 4x4 low on ice running 3-4K RPM on a dead cold engine. It literally had been running long enough for me too hook up a tow strap and that's it. 60k miles later it's still fine.

I was using synpower 5w30 and a UOA of that oci is posted on here somewhere. That run was almost 8k miles and I had below average wear.
