a good pair of shoes

Asap go try on a pair of New Balance 993's. Footlocker, etc, has them. Feels like you're walking on pillows.

Years ago I read an article about ASICs being good for people with high arches. Worked well for years. New Balance for some reason would cause hip pain or other pain. I found Merrell shoes to be a good casual shoe that lasts for years. Nothing else has lasted like them except work boots. In 3-months I start feeling unsupported with most shoes or pain. I now have Good Feet inserts and they have made a big difference. Since they are the price of your second born child the machine recommended for personalized arch supports may be a good option. I would think the cowboy boots would be good for riding a horse.

A boot is a long shoe. A shoe is a short boot. Its the same hard sole. Rubber soles make all the difference. Like a shock absorber. Forms to your arch under the pressure of walking. Its been a life saver for me. It will be for you too.

Don't laugh, how about Clogs!

5 years ago my wife persuaded me to try some Sanita Danish made, professional clogs. They are much favored by staff in Hospitals and Kitchens who spend much of their day on their feet.

They are VERY comfortable, slip on, and indestructible!!

The clog outlet in Texas sell the mens models for $35 and up, which is less than half retail.

well my boots have rubber soles , well most i have dressy boots that are leather. my everyday boots are rubber though. so is the rubber and that foam stuff on shoes what you are talking about.

This is just my personal experience. I do not have any current foot problems. I bought a pair of non-prescription orthotics a few years ago at a podiatrist's office. I was taking my mom there for her appointments. They make any pair of shoes feel "custom." Perhaps if you had some good inserts you could keep your current footwear. Might be worth the effort to vet a few sources of both custom and non-custom orthotics. I even got some good mileage out of a set of those cheap heat-molded insoles you put in the oven and then put your feet on - barefoot.

As for sneakers, most of mine are New Balance. They offer them in extra wide sizes which works great for my not-so-narrow feet.

I've had over six pair of Ecco shoes. Very comfortable. The only downside is that the polyurethane soles disintegrate after a few years. All of them have been resoled at $60 a pop. This is shameful for the big money they cost. I'll probably take my future business to Rockport.

those Dr scholls "orthotic" machines are a joke.
according to the one @ work, i have very flat feet.
i do not. quite the opposite. the "orthotic" it told me i needed made my feet hurt WORSE.
i'm the type that wears out a pair of shoes (even the highly vaunted New balance) in 6mo or so. the ONLY ones that have lasted me any longer(for daily wear), are my Bates Boots, which i can typically get a year out of.
I'm partial to the "tactical" style boots-(think cops, EMT's,prison gaurds, Etc.)
I get the 8" Side Zips, so i don't have to tie them daily.
Bates are a sub-brand of Wolverine. my only complaint is they are made in China.
These are the ones I Normally Wear...

Under Armour shoes might be worth a try. I just recently got a pair of Under Armour "Storm" running/walking shoes, and they are very light weight and comfortable. The only disadvantage is that some of Under Armour's shoes can run a bit narrow.

New Balance are great.
Light, affordable, and all sorts of sizings to fit the width.
Well made.
Boots look cool but are rough on feet.

Are you looking for a shoe to replace your boots for work? If so the New Balance 608v2 or 608v3 (newer) has a slip resistant sole, pretty weather resistant, comfortable and very durable.

You can get them at Sears for around $50.

You should consider seeing a podiatrist if you think your feet really are screwed up. You might need custom insoles, or at least some guidance on the types of shoes to avoid.

Ok, let me try to spell it out for you. Those shoes are not quality shoes for your situation. They are 1/3 the price because they're cheap, low quality shoes that don't have the support you need.

You don't have any idea what you're looking for-period. If you purchase a pair of running/walking shoes that do not correct your issue, you'll only make it worse. For example, if you overpronate and buy a cheap pair of WalMart shoes that do not compensate for your level of pronation, you'll only make it worse. If you have arch issues, if you do not purchase shoes with the correct amount of support, you'll only make it worse.

Can I be any more clear?

There may very well be shoes in the stores you mentioned that have the correct pronation/supination correction, and there may very well be shoes that have proper arch support. The fact is that you don't have a clue what you need, and you won't have a clue until you talk to someone who knows what they're doing and can assess your problems. They can arm you with what you need to look for in a shoe, and then you'll at least have some idea of what you are doing.

You are in pain, your feet are telling you something, yet you refuse to listen. Continue to refuse to listen and you'll suffer the rest of your life.

You want a "good" pair of shoes and you went looking at Walmart and Shoe Carnival? My suggestion: Either look somewhere else or drop the "good" from your criteria.
