9mm handgun recommendation

Yeah I still think the APX should have won that instead of the lowest bidder. It’s so good.
I do not have experience with the APX, it looks very grippy. Which is good and bad, depending on the other gear. I am not a huge fan of suppressor sights as the norm. They get in the way. Sometimes a grippy slide is not good, when using gloves, as it can cause to much friction with a high grip.

The Sig is surely not the cheaper gun, at least what they charge for it.

I do not like the "one supplier" thing for small arms of the military. Some say it helps with logistics in parts and the like, but I disagree.

Sig underbid for the contract. The retail market is a different story. Their margins are huge.

I’m firmly of the opinion that the APX is the superior design though.

My friend has a 5906 which I believe is third generation Smith and Wesson. I like it except I’m so use to my striker fired Glock that’s hard to adapt to the DA trigger. It will mainly be used for plinking/target shooting and home defense
I am in California so magazine capacity is going to be limited
Glock 9mm Gen 3’s with 10 round magazines are California compliant (G17 , G19 or G26).

I have whittled my 9 mm collection down to four. CZ75SA, Star BM, Remington R51, and dads WWII bring home P38. That's more than enough for me since I rarely shoot 9 mm these days. I also have a 9 mm cylinder for my Ruger Blackhawk, but that doesn't really count. Good luck with your search.

Interesting read on the R51. Is yours reliable? Bought one long ago and couldn't get it taken apart or back to together lol. I thought it looked cool though myself

Yes, mine is reliable with the four magazines I have. Two of the magazines are the old design and the other two are the updated versions. I've never a failure to feed with it. Is fun to shoot but yes it's kind of a pain to take apart and get back together again.

1a. Glock G45 : 9mm G17 frame with a G19 length barrel . 1b. A Glock G17 Gen 5 would also be a great choice.

While with AR15s I am a it of a snob and only go with high end name brands for 9mm handguns I am the opposite.
IMO with handguns ergonomics is king over longevity.

The Taurus line of handguns provides incredible value combined with the best ergonomics I have seen.
The compacts, Taurus PT111 G2, Taurus G2C, Taurus G3C ( all essentially the same gun with minor improvements) are absolutely fantastic and at $200 each, I can afford to have some handy in different convinient Locations around the house.

For open full size carry I love the ergonomics of the Taurus G3 full-size and have repeatedly beaten my buddies ( all accomplsiehd shots with multi year military experience to include Special operations combat deployments) with their Sigs and H&Ks.
Am I just that good? No, I credit the superior ergonomics of the Taurus G3, which allow me to draw and fire so intuitively.

Only issue with that G3 , its not as reliable as my Duty carry Sig because its picky on Ammo. With CCI Blazer it turns into a Jam-omatic, especially the one of my two G3s, with the original G3 magazines.
I understand Taurus has a magazine redesign out, but I could not test it, as I am now overseas.

The compact Tauruses (PT111G2, G2C, G3C) have been as reliable as the sun.
Have at least 10,000 rounds through this model line now. I have run them 1000 rds without cleaning in a range day (just adding a couple drops of oil halfway thru) and they never miss a beat.
Thats waaaaay more than any self defense situation (for which compacts are intended) with the 2 or 3 mags you might have on you, will need in reliability.

PS: Other guns I have a lot of rounds through:
Sig P320/M17 duty gun, feels high quality but terrible reliablity during break-in with anything but very best quality ammo,.. Economy ammo need not apply.
M9 beretta, One of the more accruate and nicer shooting guns out there. my old duty gun in the mil. IMO much better than its rep, very easy to shoot accurate
M1911: the dinosaur oft the bunch, the examples I shot were ragged out, so I wasnt impressed
S&W M&P 9, Like them a lot owned more than one, better ergonomics than Glock with equal reliability. But I really want that extrenal safety for civilian carry and so I moved to the Tauruses (Taurii?)
Glock 19: good reliability, hated the ergonomics, or lack thereof. No external safety which I believe is a neccessity in civilian conceal carry but thats a seperate conversation.
Assorted Revolvers but they now more for fun/plinking now, sadly no longer serious tactical tools. Still good nightstand guns due to their simplicity though. I have about 8000 rounds through a couple of GP 100s with the 4.25 inch barrel.

PS: Because of this convo I clicked some links, and I just noticed S&W has all sorts of pistols in its M&P 9 catalog marked "Law Enforcement only"???
What the everloving **** !!
Now i have to put them on my do-not-buy list for any product.

Companies that feel that a govt- issued badge entitles you to certain weapons that citizens should be disallowed are part of the problem, and do not deserve my (or anyone else's ) business.

It's one thing to give discounts so say mil for their personal weapons, but to fence off certain models to the general public is deeply immoral and shows a company is part of the problem.
Even though due to my retired creds, I personally would be eligible under their policies, its still wrong.

A lot of people I know come to me for firearms advice, I will now have to tell them about it and will never recommend a S&W of any kind.

It’s just for pricing discounts and select fire (fully auto) models.

Not that big of a deal - honestly. Those are not unique models, those are LEO prices (or, as was said, full auto). Every firearms manufacturer does that.

If you’re objecting to the pricing, you would have to block every single firearms manufacturer.

If you’re objecting to how it’s presented, well that’s a web design issue, and hardly a reason to bock a manufacturer.

Sig Sauer P210 target. yeah it's pricey, but insanely accurate. the carry model is not as impressive and made of alloy while the target model is all steel construction. they are made in New Hampshire.
