Hey guys im wondering what type of oil should i put in my 1999 oldsmobile lss supercharged? It has 137k miles and i have no idea what the previous owner put in it. I was thinking to go with pennzoil high mileage 10w30 10w40 but not sure.

10w30 but what if the previous owner put synthetic

Any dexos-rated oil, such as the Napa Synthetic on sale this month.

Smittys synthetic blend would also be a good choice, and it's on sale at Kmart for $1.99/qt.

What the previous owner used doesn't matter at all.

I'd just run a quality namebrand synthetic or conventional depending on how you treat the car. High mileage is your choice.

Yeah, what about it?

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 in the summer, and 5w30 in the winter, the M1 HM 5w30 would also be fine all year round. It has API SL antiwear levels, with tons of detergents.

Nice to see somebody who purchased a real car. It's seems to be always Honda this, Toyota that, Nissan, etc. Anyways enough on my rant of [censored] cars. You can put in either synthetic or conventional. I would go with 10w-30. No high mileage yet. See if it burns or loses any oil. If it does, start topping it off, and on the next OCI use high mileage. If it doesn't, than no need for the high mileage stuff. PYB is top of the line conventional. Also right now Pennzoil is running rebates for their synthetic line and mobil 1 is running rebates for both conventional and synthetic. QSUD and oil filter for $19.99 (AAP monthly special) and Quaker State running a rebate too. FYI. Good luck.

Having owned 3 different 3800 supercharged cars I can tell you they are easy on oil. Pick a quality 10W-30 and sleep well.

Oz specced 20W50 for the super 6, with 15W40 in "prolonged" cold conditions.

I prefer a 5W30 A3/B4...would run 10W30 (non ILSAC) with my climate.

I am extremely not a fan of 10W40 as a grade.

ditto on the nice car, i love those oldsmobiles.

i have a 97 olds 88LS, no super charger and i have run everything in it from dino to semi to full synthetic. Mileage is at over 330k and still running good!

follow your owners manual for the oil to be sure on the temperature range to be expected. and since you seem to be in illinois i would go with the thinner oil for the winter.

What are the qualifiers for a real car? I think lately people have shifted more towards [censored] models especially Hyundai/Kia for decreased cost and somewhat better reliability.

Also I have heard many people including complete strangers say the their next car will be from a company that did NOT take the govt bailout. So Ford or foreign it is.

Odd that the filter blocks the posters phrase "J@P" never thought that was offensive?

Conventional always ran the smoothest in my 3800's. I'd go with a 10W40. That seemed to always be the "sweet spot" in mine. I want to find one of these cars soooooo bad. We had my gf's parents' 99 Ols 88 while her Mustang was getting the tranny rebuilt. That Olds is a million times better a car than the Mustang.

Yes, Australia is know for those prolonged cold conditions.

If one insists upon synthetic and thinks an ILSAC 5w-30 is too thin, once again, a 10w-30 ILSAC grade isn't the answer. Personally, I'd probably run a 5w-30 ILSAC grade in it all year, but something like Delvac 1 LE 5w-30 would be a bit thicker. GC 0w-30 or 0w-40, or M1 0w-40 would be fine, too.

And I'd grab a 15w-40 conventional before a 10w-40 conventional, Australian prolonged cold conditions or not.

Garak, any advantages/disadvantages to running an HDEO 15W40 over a PCMO 10W40 in a car that originally specd an SJ rated oil (my 300ZX)?
