'99 Civic running XD-3 0W30 - bad combo?

Our '99 Civic was due for an oil change, so I bought a jug of PP. However, I grabbed it quickly from the shelf, and I didn't notice it was 10W30 until after I drained the oil from the car. The only other oil I had at hand was the XD-3 0W30 that I run in my 350 powered truck. So, I dumped it in since the temps we've seen are way too cold for 10W30 (we've seen -40 a few times this winter).

I know that the XD-3 is a little on the thick side for a 30 weight oil, which is great for my 350 Chevy, but will it do any harm to the Civic? Is there any reason that I shouldn't run this oil on a regular basis (it'd make oil shopping simpler and cheaper since XD-3 is half the price of PP).

Any advice appreciated.

I suppose it depends on how many kilometers you have on the car- it may seem a bit sluggish when the engine's warm and if it is tight as well. IMO the 0W-30 should not hurt a thing. Except perhaps maybe a very slight loss in MPG if you drive long distances, someone else can chime in on that one.

For the record, I drive a '95 Civic with about 97,500 miles (~157,000 kilometers) and I use 5W-30 in the sump because the 10W30- though it ran well with it- did seem to be notably less "peppy"; the engine uses ZERO oil too, it is incredibly tight.

I dont think you will have any problems from it, but I, and my opinion are down in Texas.

I am sure all the Civic's here in Texas get 10w30 at all the Quick Lube places around town, and you don't see Civic's on the side of the road.

That being said, you might want to do some research as to how much thicker the PP 10w30 than a similar 5w20 in those colder temps. Texas hasnt seen -40 temps since the last ice age.

I see no problem running XD-3 0W-30 in a Civic. Great oil for year round with the huge temperature swings summer-winter up here in Canada. Sure, it's a little higher viscosity for a 30 weight than the regular 5W-30's, but that just means a little extra viscosity protection when it gets hot. And the 0W rating is great for cold starts in the winter.

You should be able to run your oil changes 7-8k++ miles quite easily with a high quality synthetic like XD-3.

The car only has about 137,000 kms (85,000 miles) on it, and it doesn't use any oil at all either. The oil has been in the sump for about a week now, and I haven't noticed any fuel mileage decrease, and this car does mostly longer trips. However, the gas mileage for this car drops significantly over the winter months. Maybe it'd be more noticable in the summer.

Any worries about the HD additive package of the XD3?

Just for reference, I run the XD3 0W30 all year in my 350 powered truck, and it works well. With 320,000+ kms (200,000 miles) on it, oil consumption is next to nothing (I don't even get Chevy valve seal leakage at startup).

Isn't that a diesel oil? I don't think it's available here in the states, so I'm not familiar with it.

Is it API certified for gas engines?

Could the add pack hurt the cat? That would be my concern.

FWIW, I've been running Amsoil Diesel straight 30wt in the TL for most of it's 71,000 miles and no problems whatsoever. If it doens't burn oil, I don't see how the additives can hurt the cats.

SL or SJ was on the jug i put in my toyota 2.4L I-4

It's SM rated for gassers which is the current spec.A little thick but should be fine.I run the 40W all year but my Jeeps' are tractor engines.

I have used XD 0W30 in my Vibe 1zzfe engine just fine and "Olympic" from Saskatoon Canada used it exclusively in his 4 cylinder Vibes which he used for taxis and he wracked up over 150k miles on each of them.
