I've been using Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 w/ mostly hwy driving. Should I switch to a heavier weight due to the high milage? No consumption as of yet.

I would leave it as is. I had the same car for over 165k before a stupid teenage girl tried to pass over a hill and slammed into my rear. I used Mobile 1 in it and never had a problem with oil consumption. Man I miss that car.

Great car by the way.

I have 171,000 on my 1993 Honda Civic, no leaks, no oil burn off. I use Amsoil 0W-30 TSO oil, runs better than new. Try Amsoil 0W-30, I think you'll love it!

130000 on an Accord isn't high at all. My 92 has 211000 miles, and my stepfather's 90 EX-R has probably 300000 on it now and they still run well. I switched to Maxlife 5w30 and it seems to have cut my oil cunsumption a fair bit.

55,
Which Maxlife did you use, the dino or the Synthetic MaxLife?

I have a 92 1.5L Civic. I use Castrol GC 0W-30. It has 154,000 miles on it. I drive about 65% HWY. I have NO consuption problems with my oil. I have used Auto-RX to clean the inside of the engine, which helps with seal leaks.
If your not consumming oil, I would not change anything.
If you want to try something, you could try using JUST a couple of ounces of Valvoline Synthetic Oil Treatment (VSOT for short).

Good Luck

How long have you been using the m1 EP? If it has been awhile and you do not see any consumptions, i guess i would stick to the 5w30. I dont really know the history problems with your car but sounds u try to keep it well maintained which is very good. Stick to the 5w30 for awhile and see if any issues come up and tell us. We'd love to hear and help peoples' issues with their cars!!! =)

Keep using 5w30 oil, your gas MPG will go down with a 40 weight oil. 130K miles isn't considered 'high mileage' for a Honda.

My wife also has a Honda (Civic EX) with 130K miles and when I tried 5w40 Truck & SUV M1, the gas MPG dropped 4 MPG

I think that the owner's manual states that 10w-30 can be used in your Accord if the temperature is above 20 degree F. Just so you know.

man, lately my 95 accord has been consuming oil.

i'm thinking about trying auto-rx to clean the rings, b/c i don't know any other way for the oil to get out, since there are no leaks.

i'm just apprehensive about paying more than $20 for a product, even with a guarantee.

My '95 EX owners manual says to use 5W-30 in all conditions, but that 10W-30 is acceptable too. On the other hand, the factory maintenance manual recommends:

SAE 30 from 45° through 90°
or
20W-40 or 20W-50 from 10° and up
or
15W-40 or 15W-50 from 0° and up
or
10W-40 from -5° and up
or
10W-30 from -5° through 90°
or
5W-30 from as cold as it gets to 90°

*all temperatures F

I've run 10W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40, & 15W-40 in this car, and no oil has affected my gas mileage. I've got an excel spreadsheet which tracks every tank.

My car ran beautifully before I Auto-RXd it. Didn't burn or leak ANY oil. Ever since the 3 treatments, I've had oil leaking from somewhere near the distributor, down the brakelines, down onto the cat and burning at a rate of 1 qt/1500 miles. In addition, something caused cylinder 2 to start missing, lose 40 lbs of compression, and foul its plug every 1500 miles. Thankfully, that completely stopped after 5000 miles, and compression returned to normal.

My gas mileage didn't improve during or after the treatment, I don't notice more power, and the engine looks dirtier under the oil fill cap if anything (see this thread to see what it looks like under the valve cover). The only thing I notice is the stench of oil burning on my cat!

Based on my experience, I strongly advise against the use of Auto-RX in an F22B1. I know mine sure didn't like the stuff!

palut, did you get that oil seal retainer put in?

it was a recall about 2 years ago?

i dunno where it's located, but it's one of those random possibilities.

ain't broke, don't fix it. i've messed up too many things by trying to make them better.

I haven't had the oil plug one done. IIRC, its for '94s. I called the Honda dealer, and they looked my car up by VIN #. There were two recalls, one for A/C wires, and one for something else that had already been done by the previous owner. I had them do the A/C wires one, so now both my recalls are done.

We ran 5W-30 in our old 87 Accord until we sold it at 165,000 miles. No oil leaks or consumption. That engine easily had another 100K in it. If your engine is healthy, why not keep running 5W-30, maybe add some Lube Control as we do in our 02 Accord V6.

Update:

Used a little less than a quart during a 7,000 mile oci.

Switched to green GC 0w-30 and will keep an eye on it. Hopefully the heavier 30wt will cut consumption.
