90915-YZZN1 Failure/C&P

2017 Toyota Prius
146k current mileage
Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy or EP since purchased at 99k
Unknown miles on this OCI, maybe 4k.
I just change it based on the MM.

Out: 90915-yzzn1, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20
In: Mobil 1-203a (import) Mobil 1 ESP 0w20

Normally don't track or C&P on this vehicle but I saw a post talking about these Denso filters separating at ths glued base and had to cut it and see.

I had replaced the denso with another (newer) one, but upon cutting this one open, I swapped it for the Mobil 1 filter. The newer Denso looked fine internally.

Welcome to the club of rubbish Toyota filters, I had my fair share of them here and moved on to something else better. Someone in Thailand is sleeping on the job...

Disappointing to see a factory oil filter fail, and a Toyota one at that.

The aftermarket Denso FTF filters made in China seem ironically better.

Is this now considered used? Returnable or not is the question I’m wondering about. It’s definitely defective.
Someone in another thread opened most of a case of N1's to find every filter like this, or even separated in more than one spot. He was offered a refund by Toyota, but I'm certain YMMV on that.

I thought I'd update the thread on Toyota's response regarding these defective filters. The woman I was dealing with is the senior administrative officer in Toyota's executive office. She said they contacted Denso to inquire where in their process these filters could be getting damaged and Denso replied with "we won't share information about our processes". Evidently that was the extent of their getting to the bottom of this with the manufacturer. She also told me that they contacted East Madison Toyota's parts dept to have them inspect/dissect some filters. That request was answered with "we found no defective oil filters". She then told me they would gladly accept the rest of my filters back in return for a full refund. My response to her was no thank you, I plan on inspecting the rest of these filters and posting my findings on as many forums as I could. So here are the pictures and you can see that 8 of the remaining 9 had torn resin and pleats.

Another failure. Same date code of HJGE15

Of the 6 that I purchased from that batch, I've cut open 5 and one was already failed like this out of the box. I'm contemplating short-changing a PG-made filter to see if the 6th one that went on today is like this too. That would be a 50% failure rate for me. I will be using PG-made filters from now on.

Well, decided to do the fast changeover to a Microgard today. The 6th filter didn't fail with a cracked glue ring, but it was similarly defective. A lump of excess dried glue right at the media seam was creating a large gap around the center tube, even with the media in the can or with me applying some pressure by hand.
