Not something from 1988, I think it is 96 and newer, certainly not 1988.

It's too bad you are so far away... I have a code reader for that vehicle. It will even do all the tests where it triggers the cooling fan, speeds up and slows down the idle etc. (KOER test)

That is what we're looking for. At this point whatever it is, it's a hard fault! I'm on a mission of sorts, this thing has me PO'ed and it isn't even mine!

I was told (so it could be wrong) that some of these lights you could reset, others had to be replaced. He said his had to be replaced and Ford wanted big $ for it, so he cut the wires to it. Pulling a bulb was not an option. Anyhow that is why we can't access codes from the check engine light, and why the scan tool is needed.

I'm to the point that if someone said sounds like part XWZ, I would have him buy it throw it in and reset the idle strategy and hope! LOL not a great way to do things, but something I've considered since I seem to have married this thing!

That is incorrect. The CEL was triggered by the ECM when a fault was detected. If somebody had used a code reader on it, it would have told you what component had triggered the fault.

Sounds like they tried to hose him.

Walmart should have it, they are like 20 bucks.

Thanks we'll check it out. As far as getting hosed, sounds like a possibility but its been a very long time since that light was shut down. Since the service engine light was tampered with will we be able to pull codes with the $20 scanner?

Thanks to all you guys!

Yep, you should have no problem.

I would almost guarantee you its the MAP sensor...

Long story short my buddy was able to borrow a code scanner late last night. We are going to try and pull codes this weekend.

Can we pull codes with the engine cold for the KOEO test? Then pull codes with the engine running, and warmed up? What is the best way?

Since I am pretty sure we'll pull some codes and swap parts, we will have to disconnect the battery. Lets assume the engine is no longer at operating temps when we reconnect the battery. Will it learn the idle strategy properly, or do we have to drive it with the new part, get it to operating temp, shut it off disconnect the battery again, wait 15 mins, drain any residual electricity and then reconnect the battery? What I am getting at is if we mess up the idle strategy are we going to have a problem with the new part/parts? Right now my guess is the computer knows something is amiss and is compensating for it, if we blow the idle strategy set up and the computer doesn't see the new part are we SOL? Or am I overreacting?

I posted this under Ford code 45, thinking maybe one of you guys following this thread would see it here: Sorry for the double post.

---------------------------------------------------------------

No MAF sensor in 88's. My buddy went and bought a MAP sensor, I threw it in and cleared the codes. Cold start it stalled twice ran close to a minute died, then ran nice and strong. After the test drive I put the scan tool on it:

Key on Engine off- 11 11 12 11. Code 12 means system can't raise engine speed above normal idle.

With engine running the light would only blink 3 times.

I am going to start looking again for vacuum leaks? Next step is toss in the towel, but I don't like to do that once I'm this involved.

Confused????????

Thanks for all the replies you guys are awesome!
