Helping a friend out-- Truck in question is a fairly base model 2010 Ford F-150 w/ the 4.6L 2-valve, 4 speed auto, and one of the old school transfer cases w/ mechanical linkage.
In this nasty weather, his attempt to get into 4WD resulted in a clunk and he wasn't able to get the shifter to engage 2WD or 4WD, it seemed stuck in between positions or perhaps neutral. He had it towed to Big-O, they diagnosed it as a failed shifter linkage, with the part only available through Ford. Total quote was just north of $800 for parts and labor.
Has anyone ever seen or experienced this issue? He asked me to help and I'd like to save the guy money with the repair if the part is readily available and it's not a clusterf** of a job, which I can't imagine it would be. Some rudimentary parts searching shows it comes as a complete assembly w/ cable and shifter together as a unit. Any input/help would be appreciated!
