82 dodge 150 4 spd slant six(225) 1 barrel unk. mileage
About a month ago my truck started giving me a ticking sound at startup. It was getting close to
o/c time.I had been running Valvoline MaxLife Semi Synthetic 5w30 w/ a baldwin filter and a pint of MMO.
So i decided to go ahead with an o/c.10w30 synthetic blend max again with a microguard filter and a pint of wynn's friction proofing. The tick went away for a week and then came back.it seems to be back around the 5-6 cylinder area.I added a pint of MMO.The tick went away for a week or so and then came back with a knock in the same area that goes away when the engine warms up good. The knock went away.Came back.Repeat at random intervals.lol.
The day after the o/c the oil was very dark, almost a charcoal color. With some apparent particulates in the oil.Several days after that oil returned to its usual brownish color.
So my question is ...has my use of MMO caused a piece of buildup to break loose and float around occassionally blocking an oil passage?I hesitate to say sludge as this engine is not known for that ,but it is 27 yrs old.I'm thinking of changing the filter in another week or so and adding another pint of MMO.And repeat as needed.Say every 2 weeks or monthly.
My commute and casual driving is about 1900 miles every month.75 mile round trip at 60-65 mph workday commute.I should be able to do a cleaning cycle fairly quickly.
Does this seem an appropriate treatment?

I would definetly take the valve cover off to see what is going on inside of your engine.

These engines love hdeo...

Not sure if your -82 has hydraulic lifters but
the last of the slant was hydraulic with a backwards
oil supply to the lifter, oil flowed from the rocker arm through the pushrod and into the lifter.

Yes,this engine has the hydraulic lifters.Late last week i ordered a rubber valve cover gasket so i could check under it repeatedly.I may do that today when i get out of the woods from hunting(i'll try to take and post some pics).I'm using the max life because when i first bought this truck 3-4 years ago it smoked a couple of minutes on first starting each day.The max life cured that. Also trying to squeeze the most mpg out that i can.The use of wynns engine friction proofing this time was because it contains a lot of zinc.Which is suppose to be good for these older engines.(btw this truck is a former north carolina d.o.t. truck that went thru 2 owners before i got it.So i have no idea what it's maintenance history was.but right now it runs good.other than the tick/knock that just showed up)
