82 dodge o/c

I have an 82 Dodge truck with a slant six and a 4 speed o/d.I usually use Valvoline MaxLife Semi Synthetic 10w30 with good results.
This time i decided to use NAPA 10w30 synthetic and a NAPA gold filter that i picked up during last months sale.(20$)the Napa synthetic was very thin as it was poured in.i also added half a bottle of Wynn's engine treatment(4oz).
Engine idled quieter.Seemed to run smoother.however i now have a good bit of valvetrain noise when underway.????
I think i may go back to max life after this.

Try it without the Wynn's before you write off the NAPA synth.

The napa syn is pretty similar to synpower syn. I'm surprised it's much different than maxlife in the way of engine noise.

Maybe I would also try without the Wynn's.

Slant sixes might be a little noisy, but they run forever.
Dont worry about it too much.

Ditto. Lose the corn syrup and stick with pure oil.

For what its worth, hydraulic lifter slant-sixes (all of them after about '77) are just prone to a bit of lifter noise. They're still one of the best engines ever made, but Rube Goldberg would be proud of the way Chrysler figured out how to feed oil to hydro lifters without providing a lifter oil feed gallery in the block. Its reverse Chevy-style. Oil is fed to the rocker shaft in the head, from the rocker shaft into a drilled passage inside each rocker arm, out to the pushrod cup at the tip of the rocker, *down* through a hollow pushrod, and into the hydraulic lifter. Like I said- Rube Goldberg would be proud. But amazingly, it works.

The other thing about the hydraulic lifter slant is that the cam and valve springs are so mild that there's really no issue with low ZDDP. Same story (maybe even moreso) as the Jeep 4.0.

Nah, you're not hearing much valve noise....try the '74 with solid lifters and adjustable rocker arms after about 20000 miles....THAT's some noise.

Only if no one ever adjusted the valves ;-)

My only gripe with the hydraulic version is the other bad things they did to the head at the same time. I mean a slanty never needed to flow big numbers, but it didn't need terrible chamber shapes and potatoes in all the exhaust ports either.

hey fred i do have a 74 with solid lifters.it's pretty quiet when adjusted.
i think my problem is with a dying lean burn ignition computer.i advanced the timing a bit and got rid of most of the valve train rattle.i have heard that when the lean burn is dying it will neglect to advance as it should.so i think i'll have to go ahead and get a electronic distributor,another coil for the changeover to standard electronic ignition..i already have the carb and a mallory ignition box.i think that will be my next weekend project.
btw the 1/2 bottle of wynns was for the zinc in it.as most folks say these older engines are happier with zinc.but 440 says it is not really needed.so i may not use any next time around.
