Plus it has tons of hours and money in the chassis. We've been working it like crazy to try and get the handling and braking to be on par with the magnificent mouse my BIL built for it!

We'll have to line 'em up one day. I just bought this:

The '99 was totalled out in October @ Cruisin' the Coast, so I bought that.

1991 LX with 74,000 miles, Wolf Racecraft chassis/cage/ARB, manual steering/brakes, 347 @ 10.8:1 with BR stage 3 ported Vic Jrs., TFS Box-R with port matched lower, custom grind, 2" Kooks headers with 3" exhaust, PA C4 w/ PTC 5500 rpm stall converter, Aeromotive A1000 with sumped tank and a little juice. It'll be 4V Modular powered before long though. It weighs around 2700 lbs. with the iron block 347.

Are you going to start with a 5.0 'Coyote' long block, or one of the older 32v modulars??

Pre-Coyote 32V Modular, I already have the long-block.

1. I need more details on what the heck happened to your '99
2. SWEEEEEEEEEET FOX!!! Love the black notches. That one sounds like quite the handful!

Nothing too gory. Some girl in a '05 Malibu talking on the cell pulled right out in front of me during Cruisin' the Coast traffic and I rear ended her. It was impossible to avoid. It took the insurance company almost 3 months to figure out it was her fault.

The thing that [censored] me off the most is the damage to my Mustang was cosmetic other than the radiator support, but since it's a '99 GT on the books ($6775 and they graciously added $775 to the car's value for the $7500 in mod receipts I showed them since 2007) the damage estimate crossed that 75% threshold, never mind the fact the similar New Edges are selling for $12K-$16K. I drove my car 80 miles back home with the hood strapped down and the alignment wasn't even off.

I bought my car back b/c I just can't let it go, I'll end up fixing it myself slowly over time. I got the Notch b/c it was too good of a deal to pass up, I have a thing for Notchbacks, and it kind of fell into my lap at exactly the right time.

The underhood shot on the '91 is sick, everything is powder-coated, the engine only has a couple hundred miles on it, inner fenders are all welded/smoothed and clear coated.

As engines 'shrink' in size due to gasoline prices, we'll need those extra gears if we're going to keep driving the bloated trucks/suvs/cars that we enjoy.

The complexity/programming is something I'd worry about. Who wants to pay $10k for a trans rebuild on that used car with 150k miles? Can you imagine the dealer tech troubleshooting? Can't figure out the problem, so lets replace it! How many solenoids/sensors will you need?

Gear skipping is nothing new. They'll need much of it to cater to every driving style, temperature, and throttle position. I certainly hope that each driver's key has separate identifying memory. I can only imagine what happens to a vehicle with multiple drivers(a couple + teenagers).

I would rather have a diesel if MPG is so important.

The market isn't asking for manual transmissions. We're too lazy. Most manual transmissions are so poorly geared that it doesn't make a difference if its a 5 or 6 speed. My neighbors 3 speed manually column shifted 30 year old V8 pickup had better gearing that matched the engine output just fine, when compared to the silly 6-speed or pathetic short geared 5-speeds of today.

I think that a CVT bolted to a 3-speed auto would work just fine. Or, a CVT being used as a rear-end instead of a fixed ratio.

I feel that in the long run, the automakers are chasing tails if they can't come out with something original. 7-speed, 8-speed.... seems like a childish battle of one-upmanship. Yawn boring!

No one remembers that trans shop that used to bolt two identical 3-speed automatic transmissions together?

UH! UGGG!

A "$10K tranny rebuild"!!! Oh, no!

And there I was worrying about whether to get the 722.xxx in the '88 parts car rebuilt for a grand so I would have one ready to swap in if/as needed?

Needless to say I don't anticipate buying anything "NEW" in the future, if the future is that kind of $10K nightmare.

As I've said before, it seems that all the money saved on fuel with new transmission technology eventually goes to the mechanic to repair the transmission. The only advantage is bragging rights for the car manufacturer and the first car owner when the car is new. Then again, the new car owner often loses when he sees the car's value plummet after a short time of ownership.
