I was wondering about 5w30 in the town and country. 2006 w/3.3 v6 151xxx miles. I'm currently using castrol gtx or gtx high mileage 5w20...it depends on availibility. I was wondering if 5w30 would quiet down the valvetrain a bit or not. Anyone else ever do this? Good results? Bad results? No chang?

Slightly thicker oil generally quiets things down. It won't hurt a bit to try it. Chryslers generally like the thicker oils anyways. Some even say "don't use 5-20" on them. Definitly give it a try.

Thanks. Even in winter? Just wondering...I usually use the manufacturers suggestions so I'm new to switching viscosities

Does the owners manual list 5-30 as an alternative choice? Most do. I don't have much experience with real cold NY temps, but going to 5-30 is not much of a jump at all. You still have the "5" for the cold. Also, your vehicle is high milage already. I would not hesitate to try it at all.
I have run 5w20 and 5w30 in mine. Both synthetic and conventional and have noticed no audible difference amongst any of them. No real change in oil consumption on 5w30 vs 5w20 either. From what I've read a little bit of noise is just normal. It may have more to do with the filter than the oil. Some vehicles are more sensitive to that than others. I know my wife's Elantra is quietest with the OEM filter. I've only ran Mopar filters on the Caravan so I don't have anything to compare to on that one.

Usually only at start up if it's the filter, and even then it can still be too thick of an oil or some other variable.
