5w20 Shear

Most of what I've read indicates group II and III base oils are used in 5w20 base oils. But what are the chances of these oils shearing down to less than 20 weight? We have all heard of 40 weights shearing down to 30 and 30 weights shearing down to 20. Is there any reason for concern?

No most 5/20 are blended to the high end.
And have a slightly higher additive load.
Also they use a low amount of VII compared to a 10/40.
And new spec SM I think has a shear stability or stay in grade spec.

In my experience a well made GRP III base 5w20 will use 4 cSt cut at 66%, a 6 cSt cut at 16%, then 12% DI pack, VII at 6 %,PPD at < 0.5%. All values Mass. Volume for Detergent inhibitor package being nearer 11%. Being called 100% synthetic in the NA market. Shear is nil in bench tests and UOA bears it out.
 
Yeah, I would not expect a 5w20 to sheer. Now if you want to be absolutely 100% sure your 20 weight won't sheer, go with a SAE 20W and forget the 5w part.

Oh, and Redline 5w20 won't have any VIIs to sheer either, and will give a 30 weight HT/HS viscosity.
 
Once motor oils get as thin as 5W20 I think I would definitely use a synthetic oil. A synthetic oil would be less likely to shear. There is now a 5W20 Mobil 1 for example. Actually, Mobil 1 was a 5W20 when it first came out.

Terry and Buster, in regards to your posts, and most
specifically Terry.

Are you saying that grp 3 will give the same anti-shear
properties that a truely grp 4/5 synthetic will give?

Please forgive my ignorance, but i'm still learning.

base oils have very low shearing if at all, thwe problems come from a lower VI oil needing a large amount of VII thay are what will shear down in vis.

A high VI oil like a GPIII or a PAO will need far less or NO VII at all and as such are more stable.
