A thinner oil will wash out impurities better than a thicker oil. It will also float better to places where the oil flow is smaller. You have all heard Frank's comment about "A clean engine being a healthy engine". Well, if the engine gets cleaner with a 20weight oil, there really should be no mystery about it. The thinner oil seems(see used oil analysis here at BITOG)to keep your engines cleaner and because of this it also performs better.

100 degrees f is the limit with SL 5w20.. It will be hotter than that occasionally. Let's see what this SM 5w20 can do.
Boy I sure wish Amsoil had a POA 5w-20 and not just the XL Group III. I might just try the XL 5w-20 weight at some point in the near future.
The facts I speak of are those posted in the used oil analysis section of the 5w20's showing outstanding performance. The RTS may or may not have produced a better uoa..In the life of the vehicle I doubt it will be significantly better or worse. It was a first interval of the oil and it was heavily doped with LC and about 15% M1. Not a good candidate.

SAE 5W-20 can be run in the vast majority of the newer engines.
According to Ford's TSB 01-4-7 dated March 5, 2001:
"SAE 5W-20 is an improved formulation to improve fuel economy.
Testing has validated that SAE 5W-20 can be used in many previous model year vehicles.
It is recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be serviced with SAE 5W-20."
The list includes the 1993-up Escort, Ranger, Tempo, Taurus, Continental, Mark VIII, Thunderbird, Bronco to list a few.
Exceptions:
The 2001-02 Villager, 3.9L Licoln LS, 4.0L Ranger/Explorer and 2002 SVT Focus.
P.S. I don't and won't use 5W-20 in any of my vehicles.
I run extended OCI intervals and couldn't care less about the additional 1-2 MPG (maybe) the thinner grade provides.

There's at least one Subaru owner running 5-20 and posting used oil analysis on BITOG. I'm in agreement that since the older multiviscosity 30 weights often quickly "sheared" to a 20 weight, it's not a quantum leap in logic to realize the SM rated 5-20's are abso-effn-lutely fine to run in an engine spec'd for 30 weights. Furthermore, a 0-20 would be even better...especially for those people that mostly run around town, with lots of cold starts.
