I believe 5W40 will someday be the most preferred viscoity

On new cars ( That includes engines from
Audi/VW, BMW, MB, Volvo, SAAB, Opel, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat, etc..

Millions more use 5W40 and 0W40

Of course, since there are lots of old cars out there. That doesn't change the fact that on newer cars the recommendation is 5W-30 (or 0W-30).
Do as I said before: you can verify my statements at any European online oilselector site (Castrol, Fuchs, etc,)..

In my wifes 2005 Volvo XC-90, it says use 5w-30. It has the 5 cylinder turbo engine. My 2001 Audi TT 225QR uses 5w-40. It is specified in the owners manual. I use 0w-40 in it, in the winter. My 2003 Dodge truck with the 4.7 uses anything from 5w-30 to 5w-40. Nothing seems to bother it. I put in it whatever I feel like pulling out of my "stash" for it.

Volvo likes 5w40

Some do, particularly the older red blocks and higher mileage and turbo whites. A 40 made more sense in the days when synthetics were scarce. But 40 is about at the limit for good snappy turbo spool up on these. A full synthetic 30 is still nearly a universal fit in any Volvo made after 1975, unless you've modded considerably.

If you look at the European specs on some of the latest engines, the trend over there is towards full synthetic 30s, even with VW (M1 0w-40, aka "30 soon enough" notwithstanding). They're still spooked over here about the 1.8t debacle.

Thinner is in, it seems, except in the very hottest climates.

There's a 5W-30 GM-LL-A-025 oil. GM-LL-A-025 is the oil specification for Saab and Opel. I don't remember who makes it.

Also Ford specifies an oil meeting WSS-M2C929-A in Europe, just as they do (or did, until they went to 5W20 for most models) in the USA.

Castrol Syntec 5w30 european formula (made in Germany) seems to an excellent oil. Many think itis almost a 40 weight. I currenlty use it in my 95 BMW and the car seems to run well with it.

And many mechanics out there are saying synthetic oil causes leaks and you need to change your oil every 3k miles. At 3k intervals does it make much difference what you use?

1. Many "mechanics out there" are idiots, stuck in the 70s, or both.
2. Any SM rated oil will be fine if you are driving a typical vanilla FWD appliance and performing 3K oil changes.

Where are you purchasing Castro Syntec Euro 5W-30?

Perhaps he is referring to the synthetic 5W-30 available from BMW dealers.

BMW High Performance Synthetic 5W30. You can buy it from a BMW dealership for $4.95/qt if you're lucky.
