5W-30 benifits over 10W-30?

Seriously, with this engine and oci's required for warranty, I see no real advantage to the 10w30. It isn't a turbo and I don't think it's that tough on oil. I can't believe the sludge monster rumors. I doubt it. I would prefer the 5w30 at least in Winter. I wasn't that impressed with the real world cold crank of M1 10w30 around 0°F. I have had the same battery, too. M1 10w30 is like a rock, but unless you have certain turbos or consumption issues, I see no advantage.

After his last visit, TallPaul is banned from Tennessee until the year 2009!

He has received a review and dispensation.

He may return at any time. The authorities realized he temporarily freaked at all the 5W-20 and 5w30 being pumped into Ford trucks and was not therefore responsible for his actions.

Thank you. I actually get a cold sweat and racing heartbeat anytime I hear 5w-20 or -30 and Ford truck in the same breath.

Oh yeah, y'all have mountains down there too and so it really would get very cold in some areas.

But your kindness and understanding oblige me to come visit your wonderful state again.

A eatin' breathin' snorin' transplant from the PRNJ (People's Republic of New Jersey) one of the worst states in the nation for second ammendment rights but that is another topic.

If 10w30 has generally better specs, then why not use it all year round. I am interested in lubrication and 10w30 seems to have less additives that take the place of lubrication than the 5w30.

by 3putter (which I try never to do): It would be interesting to know what part of TN you live in. On the Cumberland Plateau and up in the Smokies it can get REALLY chilly in Winter. I lived in Cookeville for several years before moving out to Memphis, and we had winters that approximated the upper midwest. BRRR !

Why would you not follow what the owners manual recommends? I would think that you would go by the book with a new ride.

I am in the Knoxville area and the truck gets garaged 95% of the time. It goes to 25 degrees around here and not much lower. By 10AM we are in the mid to high 30"s. The truck will get few very cold starts and as I stated in another post, "the manual is written for the masses". We on this site do in fact question the recomendations in manuals that are written for the masses and try to customize the situation to meet our personal needs. Input from other members of this forum is a welcome thing to assist in making our decisions based on our experience coupled with theirs.

Up to now, I am not convinced a 5w30 is the best all around weight to use in this truck and that 10w30 will offer better overall protection with regular changes.

Well, we started with talking about synthetic and M1 specifically. Probably Amsoil's top two formulations are a 5w30 and a 0w30 and Castrol's available here is a 0W-30. With synthetics, I don't think you can make a generalization of what's more robust based on the xW-30 numbers.

My car specifically recommends 10w30 but I run 0w30 and get lower wear with GC.

I have no personal experience with M1 in the new formulation, just SL.
