4/6 or 8 cylinder hasn't a thing to do with it.20w50 was used a lot in past decades and engines sounded like [censored] on cold start with that thick stuff in them.Diesels traditionally have used 15w40 not 20w50. Run eaither 5w20 or 5w30 but I'd use the 5w20.

Bottom line is the Modular will outlive you as long as you put some liquid in the crankcase.

The back-spec was to help with dealer inventory more so than CAFE.

I'm not sure where you got that info, the the Barra 220/230 5.4 3V is assembled at Essex (the reason they come with 5W-20 on the oil cap) and does use VCT. The owner's manual calls for a 5w30/10W-30.
