That something was that engines got smaller. Not too many 400+ c.i. engines on the road nowadays. Was 5w30 around back then? That was before my time.

Probably not, but most Fords sold are 4 and 6 cylinders. My original question was in regards to higher performance V8s.

Mainly because the whole idea now about using a 30 or 40 or 50 is because of more heat. The hotter the oil gets then the thinner it gets. Wouldn't oil fluidity become meaningless if it is not thick enough to lubricated engine components?[/quote]

You do realize that while vastly improved, if you've been using a conventional 5w30 you've been using a 20 grade at some point in the interval, don't you? The only difference is that the contemporary 5w-20's are 5w-20's in the bottle instead of shearing in service.
I do realize that 5w30 can shear down to a 20 over time, but doesn't that depend on the oil? Wouldn't synthetic 5w30 be less likely to do this? Aren't some 5w30s thicker than others?
