A huge issue is low phos. in GF4 oils. ZDDP is the other issue. This is why so many 20 weight oils are loaded with moly to try to help make up for low phos. and ZDDP. When you reduce HTHS,ZDDP something is going to give if not properly modified. I do not think their are many car's useing true roller timeing chains. Their was a time when Toyota OHC I4's used true double roller timeing chains. I have seen them go well past 300,000 miles with no change.
 
Keep in mind that ZDDP is a consumable additive. i.e. if it is 0.08% instead of 0.11% that does not mean it does a 30% less effective job. More accurately it means it does the ame job for 30% less time. Important difference.

Curious. What kind of chains are they using in Japanese designs? Hy-Vo chains are pretty durable and have been used for many years without problems in American engines. Roller chains are another issue and are not as reliable.

Any as anyone knows who has had one, belt drives are a sad excuse for a chain drive. Towed two vehicles home as a result of not replacing them soon enough.




I agree on belt driven cams. It is a sad excuse in design, especially when they don't allow easy access to change them.

When I worked as a Honda service advisor, it was downright painful to explain to car owner that he needed a $1000 maintenance service just because the car reached 100,000 miles.
 
Ron AKA, While what youa re saying is partialy true you will find a distinct coralation between low wear numbers and ZDDP levels. Look at Rotella-T Synthetic 5W40. In a gasoline car or truck Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 turns in some insanely low wear numbers in decent engines. The additive package is basicly Calcium and ZDDP and that's about it. It is simple and works better then some of these other low ZDDP PCMO's with boron,calcium,ZDDP,sodium,magnisium(sp),moly etc......

Amsoil has relied on ZDDP in high levels for a long time as the cornerstone of their formulations with great results in terms of wear numbers.

SINCE 4k, not 4k OCI's. I run it one year or 10k.
 
I serviced a line of high speed printers where the whole paper path was driven by a "silent" chain; a multi row hy-vo chain, very similar to a SBC timing chain. It ran in a sump of 20 weight non detergent. At one point, I was out of the factory supplied lube, and substituted a 30 weight Sunoco SE oil. Ironically, we never changed the chain in that machine again. Very unscirntific, I know, but I lean toward heavier oils on chain engines.
