i got my son a used 2001 ford Taurus 3.0 double over head cam engine.ford says to use a 5w20 oil in it.i guess i am from the old school 5w20 seams mighty thin to me.their is no warranty on this engine so does it really need a 5w20 oil or would a 5w30 or 10w30 be OK for it.i know that they claim you get better gas mileage with the 5w20 but what is the best oil for it.that little bit of extra gas mileage i probably never see it any way.

Ford has pretty much gone to a blanket of 5W20. Some say its for CAFE standards. 10W30 probably has too higher a viscosity, while 5W30 would be fine, and probably was until Ford issued the change info about a year ago.

Ford "issued the change" about 7 years ago.

I would think it would be fine with 5w30 or 10w30. With that being said, I don't see what you would be gaining with it. 5w20 has been around for a few years now gaining more and more use. It doesn't seem like there has been ill effects from the use of it. I am sure most are going to it due to new standards but I would think they have done their homework and made adjustments for its use. I wouldn't change from 5w20 unless I was trying to address a consumption issue or something. IMO...

Not retroactively.

The change is retroactive back to about 1993 for most of their engines.

The change is, but when they announced the change was only a year or so ago.

No, it wasn't. It was in 2002. They've updated the list since then, but 90% of the vehicles that are on the current list were listed in the TSB issued in Jan 2002.

and even though my 2001 F150 with 5.4L is listed, the dealer still insists, "5w30 is fine, don't worry about it"
thus the reason I'm running 5W-20 (ST dino right now, for the ARX phases....then switching to Q-Power 4x4 that was BOGO)

Ah ...it's true ...Lazarus syndrome. The dead can rise again.

Use 5w-20 ..or don't. If you do and are shaky about it ..you'll "will" all kinds of problems to appear via butt dyno. 5w-20 will surely be the blame. So, it's really more about you than it is the engine. No harm either way. Some Canadian or Texan trumps your environment in either direction for longer durations at some time of the year ..and survive well enough on 5w-20...or whatever.

So that would be 5 years then not 7 years.

X2..my mother in law has the same car and all it see's is
5w30, you'll be fine using it.

Jerry, If had this car, and it was no longer under warranty...I would use MaxLife 5w30...Also, you could install 5w20 of your favorite brand...see how it goes...If you can't sleep at night then go heavier...I think they have Maxlife 5w20 now and it is about time!
