If you're in it for the long haul, go out and buy one of the $30 (+ or -) five quart and a filter special at one of the major auto parts chains to fill out your jugs...

With the cars in my sig, I ALWAYS buy jugs and the cars get something close to what the book says they require. I forgot to mention the Ford 8N tractor, riding lawn mower and push mower. Just stock up on jugs, get it when the price is good, and be happy!

I tend to stock Rotella 15w-40 and any HM 5w-30, which covers most of my needs.

So lets say that the Suburban gets 5w-30, and I need one more quart, and I'm out of 5w-30. I finish it off with the Rotella. I do not care. Neither does the Suburban.

None of my cars is exactly 5 quarts: E430-8.5 qt, L400-5.5 qt and S2000-5.5 qt. Some OCI's each had the same oil, some OCI's each had a mix of more than 1 brand and more than 1 weight.

Just buy a bunch of oil when it was on sale with/without rebate(s), that way the average is way less than half of retail.

Nick had the best response. Get your 5 qt jug from wally or where ever, then go to AZ or AA which ever one has an oil change special with the M1 (I think it is AZ). You will get 5 individual qts and an extra oil filter out of the deal!

And the extra $3 is going to break your back?

This is BITOG! The typical member probably goes into the neighbor's recycling bin at night looking for $2 off coupons for pizza or YB.

If it were me I'd just buy a $2 quart of Shell or ST. The engine won't notice

Just buy a 5 quart jug of 15w-50 for topping off the half quart in the beginning, and throughout the oci. This will keep the viscosity inline as the oil becomes diluted by fuel. And it will mix with any brand if you decide to change.

kurt --you state that you're a research scientist, and ask bitogers how they handle this "situation" ? a research scientist considers this a "situation" ????? c'mon, kurt -- find an 8 year old -- sorry, a "dang" 8 year old, and he'll problem solve this for you.you can do it, man !
thank you, kurt, for my best laugh of the month, so far. welcome to bitog. you'll do well here.

You gotta have a "dang" thick skin around here. :-)

I was really just looking for reassurance that its ok to top off with something else - even dino on top of syn.

And no Pete, $3 wont break my back but it sure kills any idea that I got a good deal on the oil. Its a mental thing, I'm sure some BITOGers share.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading y'alls wide array of responses. Kept me smiling.

Yes, it's OK to top off with something else. I'd just buy some cheap synthetic (maybe SuperTech) for that purpose or even a gallon of Rotella T6 for top ups.

Sorry if I was harsh on you. Welcome to BITOG!

kurt -- as one poster stated, buy a jug of supertech.this will solve the issue, and you have enough makeup oil for the next several oil changes -- regardless of which oil brand that you choose. have a good day.

Ha ha!! Yeah, I know, I would probably jump off a bridge if I had a car that needed 5.5qts, oh no! Wait, my car DOES take 5.5qts and some how I've figured out to purchase a 5qt jug and 1-1qt and use half of it. When I complete my NEXT oil change, I alread have the half qt sitting there, I just need to use a new 5qt jug again!! Sheesh, how could I ever come up with that solution WITHOUT bringing up the question to BITOG?

Yeah and burn extra gas (money) to drive to the location to purchase another sale isn't penny wise. Could just pick up one cheap qt from WalMart...after all it's only a half qt.

Just goes to show you how anal we BITOGers are. Stick around here long enough, and you won't even find it amusing any more.

If you really don't want to buy any more oil. Then you should do a cold oil change or drain until it starts to run down the side of the oil pan, you know, dont let it drip dry.

That should save you your precious pint.
