I've seen a lot of references lately to 5.1 jugs. In the past, I used to always pick up 5qt jugs of M1 at Wal-Mart. These jugs at the time we're just labeled as 5qts. It's been 3 years now since picking up jugs because I built up a stash of single qts. Now, I know some lubes are now sold as gallons, and then there's the 5.1 jugs. So, is the 5.1 reference refer to jugs contain 5qts in one jug or 5qts + 1qt in a jug(=6qts total, which would be perfect for me, and a senseable packaging move as oil sumps are getting larger).

It is exactly as listed. Five and one tenth quarts. (5.1 Qts). If you look close, you will see that it is also listed liters, and the amount is less than 5 liters.
Now the question should be, why are they packaging it in 5.1 quarts? Why not continue 5 quarts, or better yet, 5 liters?

I think most vehicles designed in Asia or Europe use liters as the normal volume measurement. When sold in the US they just convert.
according the Mobil Rep, the 5.1 is designed to specifically not be left out of the loop with the 5qt jug and 4qt jugs. Walmart and autozone specifically have the market on these jugs (allegedl) so Mobil, not to be left out, made a 5.1qt jug.. just to be different, but the .1qt won't overfill a sump should it all be put into a 5qt system.

The 5.1 quart jugs exist for the same reason you find unique packaging for some products in places like Costco. I think some manufacturers have agreements with certain merchants to not sell the same product to anyone else at a lower price. Introducing a new "product" (e.g. 5.1 instead of 5.0 quarts) is a way around it. Or something like that - it's nothing to do with metric conversions or anything actually meaningful.

I wish that the oil companies would have just made a standard jug that contained 5 Litres period, that way there would be less cost for having multiple versions of containers and hopefully this would have saved the companies and the consumer more money. Somebody needs to tell them this fact, especially since the cost of oil is OUTRAGEOUS now!

bigger jugs are better
A while back there was a question on the Mobil website as to why only Walmart had the 5 qt jugs. The answer was that 5 Qt jugs were a "Walmart Exclusive". I would guess that 5.1 was to get around the exclusive deal.
I rather prefer the gallons actually, or individual quarts for that matter. We have 4 vehicles and 5 will overfill 3 of them and underfill the Jeep so I need quarts anyway.
In this household, all 3 of our daily drivers take just 4 qts. None of these vehicles are spring chickens anymore and they usually take at least some of that 5th quart to get thru their 6 month OCI. So that extra quart DOES come in handy.

+3 IMO...That is the ONLY LOGIC for WM to have 5 quart Jugs vs all others...5.1 Quart Jugs.
