I just did oil change in 1999 ford expedition with an 4R100 tranny. drained oil in pan and convertor, oil looked and smelled alright and filter looked good, magnet had no large shaveings on it at all. After topping off fluids and new filter everything shifts fine except reverse bangs in hard and almost sounds like metal to metal and same when I take it out of reverse, but ot as loud. merconV used about 15.5 quarts as ford says to use in place of mercon. Any advice is appricated.

1. The obvious, check to see if it's over/under filled. 2. Sometimes certain transmissions don't agree with certain brands of fluid. 3. Sometimes if the filter is a little loose fitting, you can experience issues of this nature.

fluids are right on and filter was loose but other filter pulled right out and new one just pushed in , does the pan help hold it in place

Add a bottle of lube guard red. Problem solved in your 4R. The 4R is pretty picky on fluid. They spec Mercon and I know Mercon V backs specs but in all 4R's I deal with Mercon V seems to be a bit thin for their liking. Lube Gard red will thicken it up slighly

thanks I will try , just hard to believe that will take out metal to metal noise when it goes into reverse. It sounds really bad and afraid to do more damage. Tranny was fine before I changed fluid and filter

sorry but what is the product ur telling me to add, and where can I find it, like NAPA or any parts store and how much should I add. thanks again

No everything seemed to work fine, thats why I am concerned as to what could of happened. Tried it again last night and noise is getting so its not as bad but still there

I used regular Mobil Mercon ATF in mine (not Mercon V). Of the fluids I've tried in it, this is the one that gave me the best results.

I hope your not classifying Lubeguard a magic snake oil, nothing could be further from the truth.

Lubegard is one of the best names in the automotive business. EVERY trans we service or install get lubegard red. http://www.lubegard.com/~/C-112/LUBEGARD+Automatic+Transmission+Fluid+Protectant Your Napa should be able to get you a bottle. Most stock it on the shelf. Im confident this will rid your issue

If you have an Orielly's close by? They should stock the Red Lubeguard...8oz bottle... I poured in 2 bottles in my 4R100.

keep putting everything that dont belong in there and wonder why its going to need a rebuild.. Use motorcraft mercon 5 and it will shift like it did but do it NOW you will thank me
