You would be surprised.

While the front air bags are VERY important the side ones do help in some incidents.

I knew a guy with a Metro. It supposedly got 50 mpg, but it burned so much oil that once you factor in the price of oil topoffs, it was more like 20 mpg. Not to mention it probably polluted more than a Hummer H1

In frontal collisoins: For the driver, the front airbag helps significantly by protecting the driver from striking the steering wheel, even when using a seatbelt. For the front passenger, the front airbag only provides marginal benefits, and virtually no benefit if you put the seat as far back as possible.

For side impacts, side airbags make a BIG difference, as long as it's a properly designed airbag. (Some cars have curtain airbags that do not descend far enough to protect short drivers' heads.) Side impact ratings bear this out -- even a small car like a Yaris with sideair bags fares better in side crash tests than a large vehicle without side airbags like an Explorer.

I will never buy a car without side airbags, ever.

Hmmmm, must have been one heck of a motor. Mine uses 1/2 quart during a 3k OCI - no problem here.

My guess would be the low 40s. Tantalizing to me, but still, since I'm the guy who would, without any question be DEAD were it not for the side curtain airbags in my 2002 Camry, unless you can show me the side curtains (old car or new), I wouldn't have it.

you wouldn't drive a vehicle without side air bags? I've never owned a vehicle with side air bags

When you walk out of a hospital, lucky to be alive, only because your car HAD side curtain airbags, then you'll understand. I wish the best for you, and hope you never have to learn the hard way.

The last thing I saw was the grille of a Tahoe about a foot from the window to my left. It's driver estimated he was doing 40 mph. The impact was tremendously violent. Now, consider how bad a 40 mph impact would be from the front. But from the front, you have all the front end, engine, and so forth between you and the impact. In a side impact, you've got less than a foot of door between you and what's incoming...

It's amazing that those little 3 cylinder Suzukis routinely run over 200K. I agree with the poster who mentioned the beauty of their simplicity.
