Hi all,
not sure if this is the right thread but I just changed the Camry's oil. Its a 2.5 I4 that calls for 4.7 quarts. am tempted to dump all 5 quarts in.
Any harm if I do? So far I think I put in 4.7 the dip stick reads just below the top dot.
I used 0w20 TGMO and OEM filter.

Personally I almost always slightly overfill every car, truck, and mower etc that i own. and have never had any oil related problems in the 55 years that I have been servicing vehicles. But that is just me, and I also believe that the exact amount is great also.

Just dump in the 5 quarts. The volume in the container is most likely more accurate than your dipstick. Do you park you vehicle on a perfectly flat surface and verify with a scale before taking a reading? Do you have panic attacks when ascending or descending a hill? It's a tolerance. Sleep well.

easy now LOL

i will tell you i see in almost all cases most dealers overfill engines and i don't think it is a mistake. Hyundai does it to mine i have a lease that gets free dealer oil changes and i see it every time and when i ask i get all sorts of dumb answers and they know me as the engine guy!

I'd dump it in. My Aerostar had a 4.5 qt sump, I always added 5 qts. of oil to it. I had it for well over 15 years with no problems from over filling it.

Ok... how much do you need to overfill before it IS a problem... 1 quart, 1/2 a quart... more, less... engine dependent...?

How much room does a typical engine have between the crank and the top oil level...? As that is the big fear... not to beat your oil into foam... isn't it ?

For most engines it doesn't matter if it is overfilled by less than a quart, my particular engine in the E430 didn't like it when I overfilled it by 1/2 quarts from 8.5 to 9.0. I had to siphon the 1/2 quarts, otherwise I had to read the message "Oil overfilled, drain the excess" every time I started the engine.

After that 1 time time overfilled I now use only 8 quarts instead of 8.5 quarts and add that 1/2 quart after 4-5k miles.

Ha, I checked my dad's Sonata and it was overfilled too from the dealer. Bugs me and yet he still doesn't let me change his oil.

.3 quart difference is close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades. I put 5 qts in my car when it calls for 4.5
I do use a bigger filter though

If the crankshaft counterweights get into the oil it can create more foam than the anti-foam additives in the oil can deal with. For example the 16 valve Dodge Neon engine was sensitive to overfilling, it has a small oil pan and even 1/2 quart overfull would cause problems with the lifters and also can journals. This is one engine where running it one half quart low was a good thing. So overfill can hurt things.
