Just wondering what everyone thinks about interchanging these two filters. This would be for the 20HP Kawasaki engine in my John Deere 425, which currently has an XG4967 on it. Thread size is the same, but the 3614 has a slightly larger diameter gasket, but still fully seals on the mating surface. (I threaded one on just to see if it would fit) The 3614 also has a 2 psi lower bypass.

I'm only considering this because I have 4 XG3614, 4 FL-910S, and 3 FL-400S sitting on the shelf in the garage, and I've gone from 3 engines that use them to just one. I have no problem buying another filter if the consensus is that this is a bad idea.

Shouldnt be an issue..just double check that the gasket touches the mating surface on the block correctly...i have used those 2 filters interchangably on OPE...Kohler commands...Briggs vanguards...you may find that the 3614 style filter actually fits better.....there is a thread here somewhere recently talking about kawasaki aftermarket filters....3614 style was the one that worked..

My JD lawn mower has a Robin engine, 6 hp that takes the small filters, same one. The oe had no bypass valve I don't think. My main concern is the oil capacity and the larger filter. The 3614 is much larger. Your engine is much bigger, mine only takes 0.7 qts. There still needs to be the right amount in the sump. So I use the same size. The oil pumps are so small they don't stress the filter much in flow I don't think. Lawn mower shop told me "never change it." I never looked at the original very well, wish I had. You can use the Toyota filters also, or Denso FTF 150-1000, which is very well made.

A Fram Ultra should last year's on one of those engines with its high capacity media. I'd just use what I had on hand for at least two full normal service intervals in hours.

Use the filters. Just make sure you add the extra oil needed.

Don't wait too long to check oil level after a shutdown, as some adbv's leak.

Those 3614 and 3600's are great oversized lawnmower/generator... filters for the money.
