Presuming he did the research to find that the two filters he querried about were for the same application, then why would gasket diameter even matter? If the filter makers recommend the filter for that application, does it matter how big the gasket is, relative to another brand? If it fits, it fits.

First of all, is he asking about ID, OD or both?

And if you want to get technical, then how deep do we drill down to the word "same" in his question? To the tenth of an inch? To the one-hundredth? The thousandth? Beyond?

Here's an easy one-size fits all system:
1) find the filter maker site you prefer; enter your application
2) use the filter(s) they suggest


And I realize some will be defensive about my perceived aggression, but I would simply state that if one is going to ask silly questions, don't be upset when I call them out. One's membership here does not infer immunity from challenge, even if it's the intent I question. Why do you percieve it's my fault for calling you out for asking such a rudimentary question? Either defend you question with rational logic, or just admit it was a baseless querry with no forethought. Please show me where I went wrong asking you to define and defend your question? There is nothing wrong with asking questions when you put great effort into a topic, and are still confused. There is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it. Did you "need" us to research the gasket diameter of two filters for you? You could not find this basic info on your own?



As a moderator, I have the responsibility to make sure everyone is treated with respect and fairness. And although some might see it otherwise, I have not called anyone bad names, nor cursed at folks, nor insulted their family lineage or birth-right. No site rules are being violated here, so my position as a moderator is not in question. But my ability to challenge and debate is still intact. I'm not only a moderator, but a member. And the member in me wants to know why such an open-ended, thoughtless question is worthy of band-width?

I will publically apologize here and now if I made you mad or offended you personally because that is not my intent. But I will not apologize for asking why we should look up a gasket diameter for you.

DN3, I "kind" of thought you were a MOD but was not sure. I have ALWAYS thought you should be one.
I apologize for not doing more to answer my own Q?S. I will, in the future, try in every way possible to do my research about a subject before coming here and asking. But, as always, I still respect your knowledge.

Sir, I meant to post this earlier, and I am sorry for the delay.

You can use the Purolator PureOne 14776 / 14777 interchangeably on that engine. However, not to muddy the waters, but, if you are going with a larger filter, you may want to consider using the larger Purolator PureOne 10241 or even larger 20195 (FL 400S equivalent), which also fit on that engine.

The size progression is as follows:
14776 < 14777 < 10241 < 20195 (FL 400S equivalent)

To put it in perspective, using this 20195 filter increases the volume of oil in the sump by 0.27 quart (8.64 oz) over the 14776, and increases your filter surface area significantly (although I am not exactly sure of the sq. in. difference). The O.D. of the filter gasket on the 10241 and 20195 are a bit larger than the 14776 / 14777, but still fits on the mating surface well enough to prevent leaks.

I am not making this statement based on anything I have been told, but instead on that I have actually using an oversized filter (same size as 20195) on my 2006 Toyota Corolla (1zzfe) and my girlfriend's Camry (5sfe). I use 4.75 qts when I change the oil in the 1zzfe and 4.25 qts on the 5sfe; it makes it easier on me to use 9 quarts when changing the oil in both vehicles in the same day.

Thank you sir. While at Walmart this week I compared the MC FL-400S base gasket to the Purolator L14477 base gasket and the FL-400S was almost 3/8" larger in diameter, which convinced me it would work.
