Found this on my LR forum. I have a 2016 LR4 that uses this same style filter. I've never had this happen to mine. Used OEM Mahle for warranty. Since has been AC Delco Gold PF659.

Appears the bottom end cap has separated. Looks like M+H is using faulty glue on these as well…..

For me, not really enough information. But, same as with all cartridge applications, fit in housing an important factor. So, unless one has experience with or observations of an aftermarket cartridge application, OEM is the safest call.

Was the cap tightened down too hard? Maybe crushed the bottom?
No way for that to happen. Top cap is oring seal and shoulders into the block. You basically tighten to snug to seat the oring. Plastic threads would strip on cap long before you crush something.

When I looked at the picture in the link, the first question that crossed my mind was how old was that filter? Was the plastic so old that it started to crack? The second question was how much head did this filter get exposed to, to cause the plastic to crack like that? Was it stored in a garage with no air conditioning, in Texas or Arizona or somewhere similar, for a few years before being used?

It's hard to wrap my head around, that the plastic end cap would fail like that in a normal engine environment, unless it was already compromised. Could it be a manufacturing defect? Sure. But it seems just as likely that it was exposed to extreme heat over time, before it was installed. It would be very interesting to know more.
