3 valve 5.4

There was a time that I was running RT6 in my Navigator 5.4 3V engine because when oil temps got hot, the engine would start sounding like it was eating marbles. I added an oil cooler and went back to 5/20 without issue.

But now I am starting to notice that "chak-chak-chak-chak-chak" noise when I am in tunnels or near a wall at about 1000 rpm under light throttle. I'm about to do another oil change. I see no harm in going back to a 40 in the mean time to see if it gets any better.

I have plenty of M1 5/40 lying around from a bulk I have saved for our E350C, so I think I'll drop that on in.

OK; sorry about that. I'll try to stay on point ...

How about this:

or maybe this, because it's made for even colder climates (as if your average low of 28F in TN is so cold that a conventional oil will freeze your piston skirts to the walls ....):

Ohhhhhh - wait a minute; what about these? There's a 5w-40 in here:

How about the Titan Cargo 5w-40 from Fuchs? Sure, you'd have to import it, but there is no expense to be spared to save your engine from the eminent demise of ol' man winter, right?

Or perhaps this?

You know, because the typical 5w-40 TDT is just too pedestrian and just not "HDEO-ey" enough for your mod motor, so a true commercial truck HDEO is probably better than the TDT ...

I would caution you to stay away from this: http://www.shell.com/rotella/products/t6.html
T6 is rumored to not really be a "synthetic", but probably some fake facimily made from the tears of toddlers and goat milk, because only "real synthetics" can handle temps below freezing
And don't use this: http://www.valvoline.com/our-products/motor-oil/premium-blue-extreme-diesel-engine-oil
because it, too, is fake synthetic and not real synthetic ... I realize it states "full synthetic" on the label, but that's not "real" because it's not just expensive or exclusive enough.

Wait a minute!!!! I found it!!!!! The PERFECT oil for your Triton engine:

This HAS to be the right oil; I mean .... it's hard to find, it's expensive, it's 5w-40 HDEO, and by gosh, it even has the same name as your engine! Triton oil for your Triton motor. That can't be a coincidence, can it? I'll bet they made this oil just for your engine in TN.

My girlfriend was looking at me like an idiot because I literally burst out laughing when I read this. Then I was left to explain to her that I was laughing at a joke about engine oils, and received the sound assurance that I'm a dork.

Yet another keyboard [censored]. If only for an ignore function...

I don't often call out people's behavior on a message board because everyone is entitled to their opinions, but dang Dave that's behavior unbecoming of a moderator.

Just because you don't agree with the OP and he doesn't agree with you doesn't excuse you trying to belittle him. If you disagree so vehemently with him, just move on to another thread. If you view the majority of the posters on this site with such distain, why do you stick around?

OP, while the 10W-40 you've been using in the summer seems to meet your needs, I see no downside of seeking an HDEO in the 5W persuasion. If for only a couple of dollars more, there's really only possible up sides to using the HDEO in the winter. And I don't think that we need any empirical evidence to see that at worst the HDEO will create no new harm while only being slightly more $ than the 10W-40 conventional.

That's true, Dave!

Actually, up here, TDT is too "Walmarty," if that's a real word, and "expensive," which is certainly a real word, at double to cost of Imperial Oil, but I digress.

Honestly, I'd be torn on this issue. In TN, I wouldn't worry extensively about the climate. But, I don't like 10w-40 all that much. The A3/B3 A3/B4 mentioned is certainly a possibility that should be considered, too, given the affordability in the States. To be honest, I know TN isn't that cold, aside from some outliers, so even a 15w-40 shouldn't be discounted out of hand. The old Audi's manual called for it down to something like -15 C or -20 C.

I don't see any benefit to anything thicker than a 10w30 in a mod motor.

If the phasers are noisy, The best way to fix it is to replace them with the updated design.

Masking the sound with a thick HDEO isn't doing anything for the issue.

The Mod motor is not known to be quiet by any means. The phasers along with the combined total of 120 chain links means there is a whole lot of chain length spinning around behind the timing cover.

I dug out my stash of M1 0/40 today. It's going in my Navigator tomorrow when I get back from a road trip. From everything I have read, it keeps the mod motors the quietest between PUE 5/40, M1 TDT, and it.

Not really in the mood to bust open the whole front of the engine and get the "special tools" just yet. I'll save that business for if it gets louder.

I know from having run RT6 before that I'm not going to lose one tenth of an MPG running a 40 over a 20.
