3,000 Mile Oil Changes...What Does Everyone Use???

If you change the 3k to 5k you might get more responding.
For 3k intervals, I would suggest any oil of the correct viscosity,

I'll pipe in. I do 3mo/3k oci, and I usually dump my oil when it has 2k on it because it has been 3 months. I use Castrol GTX 5w30. Too some of you it's a waste of time and money. For me, it is not. I enjoy changing my oil, I enjoy looking under my car for any other potential issues while changing oil, and I enjoy being proactive in making my car last a long time, even if I am dumping the oil a bit prematurely. Buying a car is in and of itself a big waste of money, so a little "over-kill" maintanence is money in the bank for me, because I'm keeping my vehicles well beyond 200k.

If I changed oil that often I would have to use the old black bottle. Looks like thats going to change the first of the year with a
massive price increase and a fancy new bottle.
I used to change every 3000 miles or 6 months, but now am going 5000 miles when possible (motorhome OCI is related to trip length for big trips--maybe 4000, maybe 5500 miles).
For 3000 mile and three month OCI you should buy the lowest price oil you can get that is spec for your vehicle, even if it is store brand. And I would recommend using the Pep Boys deals on Purolator filters, which they have run 2 for a buck and even less.

I wish you lived near me. I would take your "used" oil and run it another 3,000 miles.

Mmmmmmmmm...na..you wouldn't.. Because my oil gets many many short trips. I go through lots of mufflers. For me, it's a good thing to change my oil more often.
I change it every 4 months with dino, I figure if you can get 5 quarts of dino (on sale) and a decent filter for around $12 it's worth it for me to change more often, now if conventional oils sky rocket in price then I'd switch to synthetics and do longer OCI's.
Been one-a-year since about 1976. Always have and always will use nothing but synthetic.
I agree with your method Buick92. I'm sure I could go 4 months, plus, I would likely have 3k on the oil if I waited that long. I only continue on with the 3mo/3k rule for myself as it gives me something to do. As I stated, I have an ungodly amount of short trips on the oil, so feel better dumping it at 3 months.
I have 3 cars, '94 LS400 170k miles using Delo 15w40 with OCI of 6 mos/6-8k miles, '00 E430 80k miles using Mobil 1 0W-40 with FSS and usually 1 yr/12-13k miles, '04 S2000 18k miles using Mobil 1 10w30 with OCI of 1 year/6-8k miles. 3 mos/3k miles OCI is so '70s.
I always used Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 for 3k changes in my last Suburban. Got a new Yukon and am using synthetic 5w30 M1 or PP and will go 5000 because I am a short tripper as well. My OLM says about 5800 to a change so I go conservative at 5000.

This comming from someone who used to change oil every 1000 miles in the 60s. We would change the oil every 1000 and the filter every 2000 miles. Then around 1970 or so we pushed that out to every 1500 for oil and filter. . . It was mid 80s when we went to every 3000 miles. Finally we went to synthetic in the mid 90s still at 3000 miles. . .
After several cars with well over a million miles it became obvious that we could push it out to at least double the mileage hence every 6000 miles now and for the last few years. . .

I vote for 3k on dino. Our state police use 3k intervals and im sure they use the cheapest oil possible and all the crown vics look like new inside the valve cover. I use 3k myself, and am looking to possibly extend if my Pennzoil Platinum used oil analysis comes back good.
Johjonz: Don't feel bad as I change my oil every 2000 to
2500 miles and on the van it is changed twice a year with
about 1500 miles per change and stored in the winter.

van with the SL rating (When I could find it). Now using

i change mine every 3 to 4 months with any of the major brands of oil.Like one poster said "i do it because i enjoy doing my own oil changes".I dont have a lot of free time but i consider oil changes a hobby.
