How many out there in BITOGland are still using the 3,000 mile OCI? It seems that it is generally falling out of favor for the newer cars and better dino oils. What about for older cars and non-YB oils?

Some car manufactures recommend OCI based on normal or severe driving conditions. Honda S2000 OCI is 6m/3750 miles whichever is first for severe driving conditions such as short trips, stop and go ... Some S2000 owners may need to change oil at less than 3k miles under severe driving conditions.

Change it out every 5,000 miles or every 6 months...whichever comes first.

I always thought the 3 month intervals started with the mono grade era when every 3 months you changed oil/viscosity to match seasons/temps. I believe annual milage is 10-15k, about 1000 per month. Thus 3months/3000 miles was catchy and easy to remember. It may have been overkill, but not hurting engines. They may have also need other maintanence at similar intervals so a general reminder to take care of it all.I recommend changing right before your area's cold season and changing again right after it.Depending on milage you could go to the next cold cycle or need a change 1/2 way inbetween. Overall 2-3 changes per year max. This is with dino (hey what about chloro as a kickname plants have chlorophyll, any takers?).Synthetics once per year with the best stuff maybe 2x with group 3 stuff.

I've been changing my S2000 every 6 months. That works out to be around 2500-3000 miles. I'm thinking about leaving it in (GC) for a year though, but will decide after I do a UOA on this OCI. The S2000 is very very easy on oil of all varieties, so I expect annual OCI's to be the norm soon.

Still do 3K OCI's on my 83 Silverado with 204K on an all original 305

5K on an 08 Malibu with PP synthetic

My S2000 was driven mostly on short trips at less than 5 miles city streets one way. I have to change every 6 months at less than 3k miles with dino oil. If most my trips are more than 10 miles, I would use synthetic and do 1 year OCI.

My son's 1989 Jeep Wrangler has over 160k miles on it. It burns oil, has bad rings and a nasty knock from the top end....but we are going to run that engine until it completely dies. (namely because this thing is a Kid/School vehicle that I purchased for next to nothing)

Anyway, we buy cheap oil and we change it every three months. There are only about 2k miles on the Jeep in that time and when we dump it, it is black as the night.

Yeah ok....we are definitely not the norm!!!! :)

Did 3k OCI's the first 63,000 miles, found BITOG, now long OCI's of 7,000-10,000 for the past 80,000 miles!

If using DINO every 3000 miles is great. I still change my oil at the same intervals because changing the oil and filter is cheap maintenance on an automobile. If I was using those high price synthetics, I may see it different but as for now I will keep changing every 3000 to 4000 miles.

I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles on the Cavalier with 206,000 miles and the Silverado that now has 4,700 mikes. The Silverado got a change at 500 miles and again at 2000 miles, It will probably get changed again in February at about 5,000 miles.

The old Toyota truck with 300,300 miles will only see about 2,500 miles, or even less, a year now so it gets changed every 6 months.

I use Mobil 1 15W-50 and Wix filters.

Usually only do 3K intervals when I do the rinse phase of ARX. But, like alot of other people, pre-BITOG I practiced the 3K OCI. Now I do between 4-7.5K depending on the oil used.

3000 mile OCI hasn't been practiced in Europe since early 80's :)

My turbo charged '96 Audi had 9320 miles (15000 km) normal service OCI/4660 miles (7500 km) severe service OCI/minimum once a year. VW 500.00 oil.

Newer cars (>2000) has OLM OCI limited to 18641 miles (30000 km) or 2 years.

I go 3000 OCI on dino in the cars. This is still a good number for severe service with that oil. IMHO

In the bike with dino I go 1500-2000 OCI. My bike has a 996cc V-twin that redlines at 10500 rpm. Add the clutch and trans on top of that and you have a 3 quart oil workout machine.

I do annual OCI's on all my vehicles. Currently Maxlife in the Dodge, Amsoil in the Mitsu, RLI in the Saturn. Do about 3K with the truck annually, 13K with the Saturn and the wife drives about 16K miles with the Mitsubishi.
