I think VW is back on the right track, at least in Europe with their exteriors and interiors.

We rented this VW T-roc in Germany last year and aside from the silly name it was not fantastic but I thought it was competent and I don't know why VW chooses not to bring it here.

What does this T-roc do better than Taos that is made in nearby Mexico?

The T-roc would likely not give VW as good of a profit margin if they have to import it from far away and pay higher import duties. The T-roc is made in Europe and China, AFAIK.

Wow, a clutch pedal! Is that a common thing in Germany or Europe, renting out manual transmission vehicle? Or was this through a private owner?

I'm not very familiar with the Taos. I was just relating my experience with the T-roc.

The small suv segment of the US market is dominated by Toyota Rav4s and Honda CRVs. That's a hard nut to crack and I suspect that VW knew that it was a market that was not a win for them.

Germany and Europe have generally had a higher percentage of manuals than we have here in the states. That will probably change in the future with hybrids and electrics.

I like the ID2 Polo, while being shorter, it's said to have the same interior space as a Golf and and a notably bigger boot. I have no need for anything bigger so I can see this as my next car and first EV. The fact that it's better looking than the current Golf is also a plus.

I always, always, always liked the European look of VW and BMW ... but never owned one.
Many of the vehicles released in the E/U though are too small for USA consumer preferances.

As nice as that new Polo is (and probably even sweeter in GTI), we 'Mericans will never see it sold here. Probably still get crappy cars in black, silver, gray, with screens and those God-forsaken haptic buttons everywhere . I hope VW proves me wrong someday.

Good looking vehicle but not a snowball's chance it's coming to the US.

Did VW embrace regen braking yet in this new platform? That's been one of my main objections to their EV platform thus far, the weak regen braking. I can drive our Fords without ever touching the brake pedal for miles. Tesla regen is even stronger, you have to leave your foot in the accelerator a little bit while stopping, otherwise it will stop way short.

Yeah; when I let a new driver drive our car, 1st the acceleration surprises them, then they let off the accelerator and the car surprises them again. I tell them to simply modulate your speed with your right foot. Most pick it up pretty quickly.

Of course brake components last a long time.

So they're just now calling it the Polo? The first time we saw this it was just going to be a GTI. All of us VW fans complained it didn't have enough power to be called a GTI because it was barely faster than a GTI and no one I know with a GTI has ever left it stock. It's better I guess as a Polo, but I still have no interest in it.

Come on VW, give me what I actually want. An AWD EV Golf R that bloodies the nose of the Model 3 Performance. That's what I actually wanted when I bought my Model Y Performance. I just wanted the hatch and cargo area to go with it, which the Model 3 couldn't give me.

Your desired spec is not where VW are aiming with the ID Polo. If European manufactures are not to be wiped out by cheap Chinese imports they need to compete. Therefore the very highest priority for VW was to bring to market a low cost EV. There will be a GTI version with 223HP but that's a relatively mild GTI. For performance the top ID3 is nearer the mark with 326 HP but still not Tesla territory.

In Europe GTI is not a trim, it's always a bigger engined more powerful model with sports suspension. Golfs and Polo GTi's had a 2.0 litre engine and even the Lupo had a 1.6 with more than double the HP of the more common versions. Non of the lesser versions used these GTI engines.

The old ID styling was stupid. It was that era where they had the make electric cars look “special”.

You know GTI is just a trim. They have Lupo GTI, Polo GTI, etc.
I know it is. The first time they showed it though, they just called it the GTI. Most people said it was likely the size of a Polo, but VW never called it that at the time.

I figured they just gave up on a GTI trim level. VW has been nothing but disappointment lately.
