Hi,

I recently bought a 10 year old VW Polo with an 1.4 TDI diesel engine incl DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

The original specs for the car is: 5W30 and VW 50700. I suppose the 50700 is required for the DPF.

Now I found this engine oil: "Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 0W-30"

...and this oil also fulfills VW 50700.

Can I use this engine oil (perhaps with better cold starts) or should I stay with the 5W30 variants?

Lucas

ECT is one of the best, or top three best VW507.00 oils that are approved.
0 or 5 only matters if you are starting car below -25c.

The 0w-30 will very likely be better formulated beyond just having a better winter rating. I'd do short interval changes of no more than 7000km. Who knows how the timing chain looks. Many don't change frequently enough and they wear out faster.

I believe you can check the camshaft adaptation with a scanner and that can show the state of the chain. Maybe take it to a shop that does good work on it and have them inspect unless you already knew this and did this before purchasing which is what i hope for.

got any related video with the scan? i tried to locate one my self but i have no idea which one is the right one
is this a reliable method? my mechanic says to take it out and measure it ,from top he puts a tool to check the stretch but thats just an indication not a full inspection.

It should be elongation function or adaptation function. If it is at +-5 degrees or higher, time to change.

camshaft adaptation intake phase position. suposedly -2 to -4 is caution zone, -4 or less it's time. that's just forum wisdom though, the service manual suggests popping the inspection plug and checking the number of threads exposed on the tensioner. for ea888 anyway.
