2021 ZR2 - Bison

From what I've seen, true lockers also give you better control. The computer driven front ABS/pseudo lockers work pretty well, but involve a lot more throttle input and "thinking". Not bad, but not completely ideal.

I am going to add shock skids due to the placement of the shocks. A bit unusual why Chevy put them where they did. There is a shock relocating kit but I'm going to take the easy way out and use the skid plates.

I've noticed the rear shock placement on these trucks. It seems they are in a precarious location and susceptible to damage when off-roading. Am I correct?

Correct. It's not a good place for them. Some move them to the outside. You can get skid plates for them.

Thanks, I noticed that from driving behind the vehicle. Interesting on why they did this and not made them closer to the wheel.

Keep us posted! Nice Truck!

Thank you. Yeah I'm not sure why GM put them there. 🤔

Sweet truck. A few of my neighbors have ZR2's, although not Bison, and they are awesome.

Unfortunately, the reduced tow rating kills it for me. I have a 5500 lb travel trailer that I tow around the rockies and it puts enough a hurting on my F150 Ecoboost. If they came out with a Bison with the new 2.7L Turbo motor in the Silverado and a 6500 lb tow rating I would have a very hard time saying no.

You're right the payload and towing is pretty average for this truck, within its class. I really like the F-150's and Ecoboost engines. (y)

I am becoming less favorable toward the Ecoboost. I used to drink the Kool-Aid but after 4 seasons of towing, warping 2 sets of exhaust manifolds, and pretty much being gaurentteed to get the coolant temps into the 240's nearly every time I tow during the summer, I have lost some enthusiasm.

I think the turbo V6 concept works, Ford just didn't build them to run in extremes. Not enough cooling for the potential of the motor.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback. (y)

Bison got a workout yesterday. Wharton State Forest, a hillbilly couch transport and late evening wash.

Just hit 6k miles (4k on oil). No oil loss. Truck takes a nice even 6 quarts. I think I'll try the new Valvoline EP.

No complaints with the truck other than the below average interior. Handling is fantastic for an off-road truck. Steering is great too. Ride is on the "very firm" side. Some think too firm. The DSSV's are interesting bc the harder you push them the more forgiving they are. Went off-road last weekend and aired down to 20psi which obviously softens the ride off-road. The size of the truck is perfect for what I'm using it for. Parking is easy and its good for narrow trails.

Bumping this for updates…in the early stages of possibly inheriting one of these trucks and I’m doing my homework on it.

I traded it in for a 22 ZR2 (same truck essentially). I've had it for almost 2 years, 20k miles. No issues at all. The Bison had a clunky downshift now and then but was it. I run premium and it makes a difference.

They're not perfect, but overall they're pretty solid reliable trucks. The major issue was with the 8 speed and shudder that has mostly been fixed via a new ATF that came out in late 2019.

Also, don't confuse the 3.6L LGZ with the prior LFX V6 as it's an entirely different engine.

I bashed around Wharton with my 2002 ranger offroad (later called fx4 level 1) -- around 2006
The full skid plates were handy, Blew 2 Rancho 9000 shocks on the sugar sand dunes.. but I did have 140lb+ of Milemarker 10500lb hydraulic winch hanging off the front.
Was right after a rain I checked a few holes with a stick for depth.. someone almost sank in one .. wasnt going to be me.

Centralia PA was also a nice time except dodging all the garbage dumped there.. and the security at the abandoned strip mine that wasn't abandoned.. oops.
