2014 Honda J35 3.5 V6 engine Oil and OCI recommendations?

Did you ever take a look? Post a pic
I’m not an expert at all, not sure if this looks bad or normal. Oil cap was kinda cruddy. Just bought this used vehicle 3 weeks ago ish

Not uncommon to have varnished up J35s especially with longer intervals. One bank runs notably hotter than the other in VCM configuration. I personally prefer 5k or less intervals. My recommendation would be to change the PCV, then short intervals to clean it up. My son’s 2010 Accord looked the same when we bought it at 112k. New PCV and several 3k intervals of M1 has made a significant improvement. Also deactivated VCM. Trav swears by M1 0w-40 in these motors for cleaning IIRC. They aren’t particular about weight. Plenty of 250k+ examples on 20wt oils.

Awesome ty for the info!

I am going to finish my VRP runs and then probably switch to something like that for the later

I’m running M1 ESP 0w30 in a 2016 Acura RDX with the 3.5 with great results(at 120k now). Quiet, smooth, and clean. Just the way I like em!

quick q, is there a reason you run M1 ESP 0w30 vs something like M1 0w40? does ESP clean better or etc? just wondering as almost everyone praises m1 0w40 on here so was wondering how come ESP

hey all for this popular non gdi honda 3.5 v6 engine which is called the j35, is there a recommended oil you guys run?

seems like my 2014 wants 0w20 but i assume we can def go thicker

and i know i know oil usually doesn't matter but was wondering if there is a certain oil our engines like or sound better on and recommended OCI?

ty
Mobil 1 ESP 0/30

I take care of a 2012 Odyssey my friend who drives a lot bought used at ~80,000 miles with heavy varnish. It has seen only Mobil 1 0w40 FS and oci longer than 15,000 since he bought it. It eclipsed 300,000 miles the other day. The engine will outlive the rust on the van.

Do you know if the M1 0w40 cleaned out the varnish? Ofc I know not the intended usage of the product but just curious

Any synthetic 0w20 will be fine for the OCI recommended by the minder :)
I basically did that for 18 years with a 30 grade in my Odyssey and got an engine with the entire top end heavily varnished (which is slowly being removed by Valvoline R&P).

Do not run just any oil and do not follow the minder if you want to keep the engine clean.
