hey all for this popular non gdi honda 3.5 v6 engine which is called the j35, is there a recommended oil you guys run?

seems like my 2014 wants 0w20 but i assume we can def go thicker

and i know i know oil usually doesn't matter but was wondering if there is a certain oil our engines like or sound better on and recommended OCI?

If you have VCM active still you might want to consider switching to Valvoline Restore & Protect or a High Performance Lubricants version to get the ring lands clear and keep them clear.

I run 5W-30 in my '19 Pilot but that was based on UOA and all the short trips with fuel dilution and wear metals. I also reduced the OCI to 5k from the ~7500 the MM was showing.

Currently running 5W-30 in mine but I’ve also run 0W-20. It’s got M1EP in it now so I’ll let it go 7.5k OCI probably and do a UOA.

The J Series is pretty tame on oil. I would pick one that will keep it clean if you have VCM. No VCM? Run whatever you feel like for the most part.

I’m running M1 ESP 0w30 in a 2016 Acura RDX with the 3.5 with great results(at 120k now). Quiet, smooth, and clean. Just the way I like em!

2009 Honda Pilot here. Purchased at 185k, now at 220k.
I run Mobil1, usually Euro 0W-40, but occasionally throw a 5W-30 High Mileage in there. I run the oversized oil filter (9688) and change it every time the Oil Minder hits 0%. As far as the oil - I change it when it hits 50% and again at 0%. Works out to around 3-4k miles on oil and 6-8k miles on filter.
VCM is disabled through S-VCM.

I have a V6 manual J series (J35Y2) which I know is not DI but I thought the J35Y1's were all DI engines???

I use 0W20 but am considering a heavier oil (5W20 or even 5W30) because I am in Hawaii so temps don't even go below 60.

5w20 is not a heavier oil than 0w20 and in Hawaii you would never need a 0w oil at all.

5w30 would be the way to go for you.

YMMV, but the newer VCM do not appear to have the same issues as the older ones.

If I were in your position, I would use a 5W-30 oil that has the Dexos 1 Gen 3 approval.
That approval places stricter limits on sludge and varnish deposits.

I have 3 Honda Odyssey's with the J35 engine. They are speced on the oil cap for 20 weight oil.

But I only use 5W-30 oil in them to get the higher HTHS protection.
I made this decision years ago after googling: HTHS wear graph.

The oil I use has a HTHS of about 3.1, which is better than the HTHS of 2.6 that 20 weight oil has.

As a family we utilize the 8 passenger seating capacity + luggage for long cross country trips in the summer with the Air conditioning on and going up extended mountain inclines. Engine temperatures rise. I once did the trip with 20 weight oil, and I really regretted it afterwards. Using 5W-30 really gives piece of mind that as oil temperatures rise and the oil is getting hammered, the oil won't get too thin.

I run M1 ESP 0W-30 but mine is DI and short tripped in an extreme climate. You'll be fine with either a 20 or a 30. IIRC you have gen 2 VCM which was problematic, so disabling that is way more important than going from a 20 to a 30 on oil.

YMMV, but the newer VCM do not appear to have the same issues as the older ones.
I remember your engine was spotless!!

Triax Lubricants 0w20 or 0w30 would be a good choice 😑

Mobil 1 EP at the viscosity listed on the cap is what I run. Was Mobil 1 AFE or vanilla M1 before EP was offered. Own 3 J35s with 265k, 225k, and 115k miles. Disable VCM on the 14, you are in prime VCM trouble year/mileage. VCM Tuner II from vcmtuner.com is what I use, no experience with the other disable devices.

Valvoline EP HM 5w-30, Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30 or PUP 5w-30. run any of the above for 6k miles with a premium guard based filter if possible. Carquest Premium, Microgard select, STP XL ETC.
