Is the new Jetta that different from the new Passat? The new Passat is very highly rated, at least as far as I recall.

I guess I've been out of the rental loop for awhile. I've never seen a VW as a rental.

The competition chooses not to decontent, so they've come out with new entry level cars and let the existing lineup get fatter & bigger with every generation.

I actually like the conservative styling of the VW sedans.
It’s tough to describe. It seems more mature. I think if I had a daughter and she had three guys she wanted to date, each driving a Civic, Corolla, and a Jetta. I would be most comfortable on the night she was out with Jetta Dude…
Now that I think about it that may have nothing to do with the styling of the Jetta and what it may or may not say about the tastes of Jetta Dude. It may have more to do with the fact that I have never seen a Jetta Dude that seemed too interested in posing a threat to the virtues of many young woman…

I travel a lot for work, and every manufacturer sells to rental agencies. VW is a common mainstream rental, I have had Jettas, Passats and CCs. Of course the big 3 do a lot, but there are just as many Toyotas, Nissans, Kias and Hyundais out there. Since I am always picking up at the airport, they try to sell me on upgrades to a 3 series, X3, C-class, A4, CTS etc.

3173 lbs curb weight is bloated. It needs all 170 hp to try to get out of its own way.

Police and Ambulance services in the UK test lots of cars,well the Police do the testing, then the Ambulance service copy the results!
Skoda have come top in many categories.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service has Skoda RRV'S. the Flying Squad in London "Sweeney" now has had Skodas for a while, London Ambulance Service is now replacing the Zafiras on a one for one basis with Skodas. The City of London Police has a couple of Skodas.
But I have never heard of any VW's being used anywhere.
Lewis Day was a large Executive Private Hire firm in London they bought 200 Passat saloons back on 2007, within 18 months they were bought back by VW after legal action was threatened.
That is how overrated VW's are in my experience.
Not forgetting when I ran a garage in the ninties we had lots of middle class VW owning customers. Thank goodness, they helped make the garage very profitable with constant problems.
Strange how Audi and Skoda seem to be more reliable, though Audi have still had issues with CVT gearboxes going bang in huge numbers.
And the seats in the previous gen Passat were uncomfortable, at least the ones fitted to Highline spec (leather) and the cloth version of the same seat fitted to other models.
Ford's have not had any of the many issues common on VW cars.
And wasn't there huge issues with the oil lump drive on lots of diesel models that needed reengineering?

Go drive a new Jetta and then a new Mazda 3. When comparing drivability, road dynamics, and value for the buck.......Mazda is a no brainer. Trust me, as a former VW lover and current Mazda lover.....I'll never go back to a VW. 7 years on a Mazda 3 bought brand new and never a single trip to the dealer for ANY warranty issues or work at all.

VW's in general are awful cars. Good like anything else new, but as they age, well mechanical abortion to fix comes to mind.
If you are looking for the good VW you need to get the Golf....Both the regular Golf and the Golf GTI are excellent products and reliable as well. They have been rated by CR as as good or better than the Asian competition in quality AND reliability. Not only that you get a more practical and sportier looking vehicle as well.
That being said I love the simplicity of that Jetta S model interior.
Folks have become spoiled for features today and are getting spanked on price for wanting all the gadgets. Not to mention that most of those things will probably not be used more than a few times as the novelity wears off most drivers use only the basics. Not to mention that as with ANY make, the less junk there is the less there is to break. I wholly subscribe to that method.

Even the "non enthusiast" knows car quality when they see it. Sure, there is a segment of the population that would be 100% satisfied with a Yugo. The rest of us compare cars somehow. Whether through word of mouth, test drives, rentals or friends cars.
I can't stand the Jetta. I owned a TDI for 70,000 miles and could not wait to get rid of it. The electric steering had issues, VW was unable to fix. The car wandered horribly in windy conditions. Due to the "reactive" nature of the software. But, worse than that, the transmission hump pushed on my RH leg. It intrudes into the cabin. On long drives, this was very annoying to a guy with big legs.
The list of failures I had with that car was simply stunning.
Even the "non enthusiast" knows car quality when they see it. Sure, there is a segment of the population that would be 100% satisfied with a Yugo. The rest of us compare cars somehow. Whether through word of mouth, test drives, rentals or friends cars.
