Bunch of years ago we had a 2000 Kia Sportage. The timing belt was never changed and broke with about 110k on it. Some said the engine would be shot, but it wasn't a interference engine. $850 later, it was back up and running like nothing happened. I guess we dodged the bullet on that one.,,

But the modern era engines have a complex path for the timing chain. Unlike my 1965 Mustang with 289 V8.
I had a 2011 Elantra Touring with the same engine. Good car. Changed the original belt at 161,000 miles. Old belt looked good. Sold it at 179,000 miles. I guess I dodged a bullet.
