Simple, eh?
Yet the numbers clearly show there is. What 365 HP V8 car
with AWD and a 4,000+ lb. weight gets 17/25 like the SHO?
To put it in perspective, the 365 HP Taurus SHO gets better fuel mileage than a 250 HP V6 AWD Dodge Charger.
Ford Taurus SHO - 17/25
Dodge Charger AWD V6 - 17/23
Dodge Charger AWD V8 - 16/23

The SHO outperformed the AWD 300C in every regard, and got 1.1 mpg better despite being the heavier car. Not a drastic fuel economy advantage, but I'd bet the SHO saw full boost numerous times in that road test.
Man, what a LAME example! A truly lame one. A tired old car with an aged V6 and AWD system, against your fab new DI/Turbo?
Listen, you can believe what you want, the story has already been told in the real world, not in the hypothetical EPA numbers.
Ford has no magic. They have some nice engineering, some timely moves based on pure chance (their leveraging the whole company just before the economy flattened) and some really nice looking cars. But they're not able to defy physics.
Kool aid served here.
