So Long, Ford 5.4.

Failed cam phasers do not sound like, '"Are you sure it has oil in it?" start up hammering" - which was your description.

You didn't know that it isn't just a "start up knock" issue?

Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and / or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature, or a rattle upon starting. The noise may be described as ticks, taps, knocks, or thumps.

Guess what.... it is more than just a start up issue. You've learned something else today.

The quoted TSB applies to 2004 and 2005. And I do believe Ben CLEARLY stated a few posts ago that he's heard an assortment of noises coming from 5.4L engines, all attributed to different things. But he also stated that they were not COMMON.

THAT is the issue.

What's GM's description for the piston slap in the LSx family? "Your engine may sound like an ISX starting in the middle of a Canadian winter upon start-up. This is normal. There is no fix."

Really, this is getting quite ridiculous. You made a rather obtuse comment about "start up HAMMERING" and then have been clawing tooth and nail trying to prove you are "right", now citing a VCT phaser noise TSB as the "proof" of your initial face-slap.

As much as you [censored] and moan, you aren't going to be able to prove that the 5.4L engine is prone to "does it have oil start-up HAMMERING". Because it doesn't.

That would be about as ridiculous as me stating the LSx engines are all quiet on start-up, or that the Mitsubishi 3.0L from the Dodge Caravan didn't burn copious volumes of oil.

And that should be the end of it, but somehow I doubt it will be.

Yes, it did get ridiculous. It started about the time that the ugly "welfare company" term was unceremoniously tossed out.

Again, both of you don't believe what I heard that night. So I must be making it up, because Ford obviously couldn't have two examples of this problem sitting side by side. It must have been statistically impossible.... you know, it was about the rainbows and lightning... and maybe a leprechaun as well.

My first mistake was to respond to two other negative comments about a Ford product, when my signature file mentions that I own a Chevy...

Okay fanboys. Subject is Ford yet GM got into many threads. Redirection is a wonderful thing.

And just to make sure that Ben is correct that this is the end of it, here you go.

Any comments, PM me.
