My mother's car is a 2011 Chevy Malibu with the 2.4 litre EcoTec engine. This engine doesn't have direct injection or VVT, as the new 2.5's do. This engine is basically A larger version of the 2.2 EcoTec that have been beating around on conventional for over a decade, best I can tell from what I've read about it. My question is, would Motorcraft Syn Blend work just fine? It calls for Dexos 1, but so do the 2011-13 Chevy trucks with the 4.3 V6 and the 4.8/5.3/6.0 LS engines, and those aren't direct injected or equipped with VVT either. My thinking is that GM wanted their customers to become used to the requirement, so they used it across the board. Since the Motorcraft is a syn blend, technically it should be fine for a dexos requirement, but GM isn't going to approve a Ford branded oil. Advice much appreciated in advance.

Hers isn't equipped with a turbo, but I get what you're saying. Seems the full synthetic oils hold up better to DI and turbocharging.
My Cruze has a turbo 1.4 (but it's not DI) so I stick with full synthetic (especially since used oil analysis show it's tough on oil).
If I had the non-turbo 1.8 I would have no problem using a semi-syn. dexos like Pennzoil Gold. I'm thinking the Motorcraft syn. blend 5w30 is comparable to PGB but it won't have a dexos approval.

For the record, I believe that engine does have VVT (at least the 2.4L Ecotec in the Cobalts did). And it'll do fine on the Motorcraft.

Motorcraft is a perfect fit for this engine, and has worked perfectly well for my own mother's Malibu over the last two years.

I believe Motorcraft's NOAK is not up to par for Dexos requirements. That being said this is 2011 model year thus no Dexos recommendation is required. It should work just fine if the engine is maintained.

2011 is the first year they mainstreamed the requirement, and I was never really sure about the VVT. That being said, I believe Dexos is steered more toward the turbo/DI than the VVT.
She may not even keep the car long enough to worry about it. Probably have three oil changes left on it, if that.
