2009 Fit Oil Choices

I checked the oil last night and after 9300 miles, it was still medium brown and only 1/4 qt low.

What do you folks think I should fill it with? I can either fill it with Quaker State 5w20 and a Fram filter (since it is on sale), or I can get Valvoline SynPower 5w-20 since it is on sale as well.
Only go by the monitor IF THE OIL MEETS THE SAME SPEC AS RECOMMENDED BY THE OWNERS MANUAL. If the oil falls short, the monitor won't calculate correctly. Use genuine Honda oil which has additional moly or an oil that exceeds it like a full synthetic in the proper weight.

Understood. I'll think about it. In my book, this is a fairly low-risk vehicle compared to say, a Toyota 3.0L V6 sludgebucket with 150k on-the-clock.

Newest Fits and CRVs seem to go a long longer than the older ones.

Owner's manual requires 5w-20 with starburst. Nothing special.

Changed the oil and filled it with Valvoline SynPower 5w-20 and a NAPA gold filter today.

Prior to the oil change, if I accelerated around 4k, I could hear a "diesel-ing" or clatter-like sound. After the oil change, I can barely hear it anymore.

She has 2200+ miles on this fill now.

The clattering/diesel-like/metallic tapping sound is back, but it seems to be common with Fits so I doubt you can blame the oil for it.

The oil level has not dropped at all, it's still 3mm under the full dot, right where I left it. It's strange that 3.8 quarts did not fill it to the full dot even though I used the correct sized filter.

You may have noticed based on used oil analysis that Honda engines are very easy on oil. With Synpower or any synthetic, 10K OCI is not a thing to worry at all.

The only OTC oil that I would run 10K OCI on almost ANY engine (maybe not on those special Audi DI, etc.)would be Mobil 1 Extended Performance. If she drives around 15K per year, using EP for 15K along with a filter change is convenient.

I was very strict on the 3K OCI until I come to this site and extend oil to 4-5K on dino and 7.5-10K on syn. Right now I am doing filter every other OCI after readings on this site with the conclusion that it is safe and sound. Not that I am cheap, just something that isn't necessary IMO. On the lower end filter like supertech, stp, pure classic, I would run to 7.5K. Bosch, Pureone, etc., I would run them up to 15K (max for any filter).

I can't believe what I read in the BITOG threads at times !! First just because the OLM is not touching the oil does not mean it's not correct. My 02 accord runs 7500 mile OCI with no problems, and I have been doing that when running conventional. 160k on it now !! I also run my filters for two consecutive OCI's when running conventional, Honda knows what they are doing when establishing a baseline for OCI's filter use, and what type of oil to use in their cars.

Just because Honda, and Toyota comes out with a new great oil does not mean that all previous engines will need this oil to meet the OLM requirements from past years, I can't imagine this case being true as the oil was not, or may not have even been manufactured when the engine was being manufactured, or when the engine was being designed !! Will it be a better oil, maybe so, however I can't see why it will need to be a requirement unless Honda states this. I had a 97 accord with 280k on it running conventional oil most of it's life, around 6k OCI's on orange can fram filters, engine still ran perfect with zero consumption.

At times I just fringe when we as BITOG members begin knowing more than Honda engineer's, and then go so far as to question their OLM design, and the use of conventional oil... when in fact we may look at our own direction of the over zealous synthetic oil use, and recommendations of "extended OCI must use synthetic" Honda blows the show off the road using a conventional oil with 10k OCI, and as I noted my 02 gets 7500 miles on conventional

My fiancee also has an 09 Fit Sport with the same engine. ~17k miles on the car, and I've changed the oil twice. Once at ~2500 miles, the other time at about 12k miles. The first time I used Pennzoil 5w20 conventional, and it was plenty dark and smelly. In went some Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 that I'll change this summer when the OLM tells me to.

We're going to use synthetic oils in this car from now on, my fiancee told me emphatically the other night. Works for me...
