My brother just bought himself a 2003 Jetta 1.8T. I'm doing an oil and filter for him tomorrow. I'll be using the VW Mann filter. I have Esso XD-3 0w30 and 0w40 laying around and some PP 5w30.

The car didn't come with an owner's manual (where do people put these things when they have a car? - I've never kept mine anywhere but the glovebox), but I think recommended is 5w30 or 5w40 and should meet VW 502? Any opinions on which of the two oils I should use? I don't think either of them have the 502 spec on the bottle.

Thanks.

it might be best to get a 502 approved oil. If you don't want to bother buying more oil I would say 5w40 xd3 would hold up best in a turbo application.

Unless your brother drives flat out all the time, and because we're heading into winter, I'd go with the XD-3 0W-30. Since neither is VW approved I'd also go with a UOA 5000km into the OCI. Please post that UOA, I'd love to see it!

There is nothing wrong with using the old version (smaller) filter, if the oci is short... Right?
