Without knowing the brand related to the number below, which one would you pick for a long relationship with 5w20 oil.I know there is much more then those numbers but I need to start somewhere ;-)

Oil #1

HT/HS: 2.7
NOACK volatility: 14.5% wt Max
Pour point: -30 C
Flash point: 204 C
Viscosity index: 156
Visc 100 9.1

Oil #2

HT/HS : 2.6

Noack :13%

Pour point -33

Flash point 229

Viscosity index 146

visc at 100 8.2

I would go with #2 , what about you ???

#2

I've researched a lot of 5w-20 oils and those numbers for #1 dont look familiar at all to me. Can you pm me the name of #1?

Come on ..give us clues.

(visions of Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop II after he's already pulled the "Johnny Wishbone" act and then returned. "Get this degenerate out of here!")

"Is this a Canadian thing?"

Nothing Canadian here , other than me !!

These two oil are very common and easy to find. You will be disapointed to find that there is absolutly nothing exotic .

So which number do you like ??

I am sure somebody is going to find the oil brand, but please dont mention it right away on the board, since that may skew the result ;-) to many are influenced by name and labels

If you loose sleep I can PM you the name ...

Why is #2 given the unfair advantage of being spaced out more than #1? Are you trying to pull some kind of optical illusion trick on us?

You guys are unbelievable

Spaced out more only because the first one was cut and space from the answer given by the oil company. !!

So which one is your first choice ??

Very interesting, Baveux, messing with our heads like this. My compliments! We seem to have trouble getting past brand names... either for or against. We can't stand not knowing whether we can automatically hate or like based on the color of the bottle. Probably a lesson in life there too.

#1 Castrol GTX 5w20
#2 Pennzoil 5w20

Pennzoil looks to have the better basestock, but Castrol GTX is rumored to have some advance additives. Flip a coin.

Where do I collect my prize?

It appears that #1 achieves it's numbers with viscosity enhancer type additives, relative to #2. I write this because of the higher volatility, lower flash and worse pp - yet higher VI and viscosity.

#2 is thinner with an underwhelming VI, but probably a better raw basestock.

I would pick neither.

This is funny. I'd also choose neither, though if they were the last 2 on earth and I needed some I'd take #1.

I'll keep the post running for a few days, if you really want to know PM me...

It appears that Calcium is the only ingedient that is short in comparison. The rest are either higher or close enough that they can be attributed to batch variance.

#2 would still be my choice out of these two.

I'd go with #1, 'cuz my car thins oils out, so I'd be better off with the higher staring viscosity.
I'll note #1 seems to have higher levels of conventional adds like calcium and zinc. Makes me wonder if #1 is stronger, or if #2 relies on fancy unseen parts of its formulation...

Out of those two offerings .. I'd tend to go with #2 as well. But it's pretty much a wash based on those spec's alone. Maybe if you had VOA for each it may tip the scale toward one or the other
