Wanted to add another bike in the garage and found this -83 GS1000G with about 53000 kilometers (about 33k miles) within reasonable distance.

Bike has been sitting for the past five years so there is a bit of maintenance work to be done but nothing major.

First thing was to change all fluids and pull the valve cover to check and adjust clearances. Was quite relieved to see nice and clean valvetrain.

After clearance adjustments (shim over bucket) and new plugs I got it running quite easily. Unfortunately #4 idle circuit seems to be plugged so carbs need to come off and serviced. Otherwise nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm taking the bike tomorrow to this guy who did my -83 Katana's carbs some 10 years ago. After he has done his bit and GS is running as it should it needs new tyres as the Metzelers are over 10 years old. Will get Bridgestone BT46s as those are on my EFE too and they feel very good.

The nice bonus is that this has been inspected by specialist and has received "historical vehicle" (=old) status and vehicle insurance is just 33,- Euros per year.

I was a young buck when these were introduced and couldn't even afford to dream about these. But here we are, only took me 40 years. :giggle:

Wow! You found a beautiful bike. I was 22 years old when that came out. Just a dream for me too. Glad you found such a nice example. You did 👍 Good!

I absolutely love these early 80s GS’s! You have yourself a nice example sir. Please feel free to keep up updated!

Nice.

I grew up on old Suzuki GS's and rode a '77 GS550 all through college in the early 80s. I put over 50,000 miles on that bike and I wish that I still had it. I picked up this '82 GS650G while I was in a nostalgic haze last year for $200 and I am hoping to get to it as soon as I can clear out a couple of other projects ahead of it.

You certainly did steal that. Are you sure that is not an 81 model? I have the same bike and that color scheme was '81. The final drive wheel cup splines were rapid wear on '82's. They got back to the right ones in '83. G650G's and GS850G's. Not sure about the GS1000G's, as they used a different cup.

In case you didn't already now, the GS650G's had many one model only designs. Styling and maybe more by Hans Muth, formerly of BMW. Plain bearing crankshafts, not roller bearing. Very high oil pressure. Engine sump oil is the primary lube. Direct through drive in 5th gear. Also, a chain drive roller crank GS650E and the first Katana, GS650GM. That Katana wasn't sold in the US but Canada did get it.

My '81. Photo is a few years old. Different muffler set up now.

It may very well be an '81. I am going on what the previous owner told me and my memory. I have the paperwork around somewhere. The bike was bought it in non-running condition but I did hear it fire briefly on ether so I know that the carbs will be coming off at the very least. Thanks for the info on the 650s.

That's a very nice 650 that you have there, how long have you had it and how many miles are on it?

Thanks. I believe it has about 29k mi. on it. I've had it since 2019 and I did a number of fixes on it. Stalled out project for now. In early 2019, I sold my previous bike, a kitted-out V-Strom. By late Summer that year I knew I wasn't done yet. I was sure glad to have it in 2020. Good luck with the projects!

I remember it took the E model to dethrone Honda's CBX as the king of quick...

My 82 GS1100E was probably my all time favorite bike.
Yep, the E model was a well rounded package...I also remember it duking it out with Kawasaki's GPZ 1100 for a few years...that was back before the crotch rocket days...

Also a phenomenal bike. I swapped back and forth between these two brands a lot over the years.

I ended up on a ZX11 after a few other 1100's including a V65 Sabre which I also liked.

Ultimately I put a Mr. turbo kit on the Zx11 and at that stage had a machine that was the only thing I've ever owned that I can declare was " too fast".

I worked for a guy that took a small group of us on outrageous trips with a van towing the bikes to begin the trip and ghosting us so we could bring a full wardrobe and a variety of gear to make the most of limited time off work.
